Is Kamaru Usman right to challenge Alex Pereira's pound-for-pound status, or is he overstepping?

Alex Pereira has been on a roll recently. The light heavyweight champion defended his title back-to-back in just 4 months against dangerous contenders. He defeated Jamahal Hill and Jiri Prochazka where the latter fight was put together on short notice at UFC 303. Pereira is definitely on the list of becoming one of the best ever in the sport. The main question, at the moment, is whether he will move to heavyweight or not.

Since Pereira has conquered both the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions and is possibly on his way to heavyweight, many believe he deserves the P4P ranking. However, Kamaru Usman is against it. As a result, Daniel Cormier has now clapped back at Usman while making his case for Alex Pereira.

The former welterweight champion had claimed that the Brazilian’s limited fighting style restricted him from other contenders on the list who have multidimensional skills. However, the former double champ came onto his YouTube channel and expressed his concerns. DC clapped back at Kamaru Usman for not considering Alex Pereira on the P4P list. Even though he agreed with some of the arguments that the Nigerian Nightmare made, the former MMA star believes that ‘Poatan’ deserves a higher position in the list. He even surpassed Jon Jones in the rankings and he got the recognition he deserved.

DC said, “Kamaru had success in his own regard. But we are not determining a fighting style. We are determining if the style that you have or that you possess has allowed for you to be successful in a different weight class.” He said that Alex Pereira gets a full score in this regard because he was both the middleweight and the light heavyweight champion with his limited style and with only 13 pro fights in the UFC.

According to DC – “Pound-for-pound rankings should be based on a Fighter’s ability to fight between weight classes and find similar success.” While making his case, Daniel Cormier also demanded to Dana White that the pound-for-pound ranking should have “three guys at the top, no question about it.”

DC concluded by saying, “So while I agree with you Kamaru on this fact – He does not seem to have P4P style when putting it up against Makhachev or Jones or all those guys. But the style that he has is P4P.”

Even though DC agreed with the P4P-style conversation, he still believes in the ranking Alex Pereira has. He shared his love with Usman, a fellow contender but differed in his opinions. In the meantime, Pereira opened up about his next match.

Poatan answered the question about his next fight in his YouTube video. He said that he is not interested in fighting other contenders like Tom Aspinall in the heavyweight division unless a title is at stake. And unless that is the case, it is not his main goal. He said, “ I’m talking about positions. I think I’m in another position now. It doesn’t make sense for me to dispute [fight for the] interim belt.”

He also explained that he wants to rest a while and evolve his training. Alex Pereira fought back-to-back within a span of four months, so the rest is well-deserved. He has tentatively set his return for between November and December. He said, “But before November, I don’t want to go back [to fighting]. I want to rest and evolve.” Pereira said that he would take some time off but he would be back and take his rightful place in the UFC and defend his title.
