Does Jon Jones' $100,000 gift from Elon Musk signal a new era of athlete-tech mogul partnerships?

While the MMA sphere waits for Jon Jones to return to the Octagon, the undisputed UFC heavyweight recently shared an interesting update on social media! ‘Bones’ has been sidelined from competition since November 2023 after a torn pectoral tendon forced him out of his first title defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295.

Jones caused a frenzy amongst the fans as he recently proclaimed on social media, “November 9th, Madison Square Garden, I know it seems like a dream but it’s really happening”, indicating that his comeback plans are underway. In another update on X, ‘Bones’ has also shared a picture of the latest addition to his garage, accompanied by a cryptic caption that has left many fans speculating.

During last year’s Mark Zuckerberg vs. Elon Musk back and forth regarding an MMA fight between the two tech moguls, Jon Jones took to social media to state, “You already know I am Team Zuck, Let me know if you need a training partner!” But it appears that the support doesn’t extend to ‘Bones’s preference for automobiles!

In a post shared on X, Jon Jones unveiled his Tesla ‘Cyberbeast’ model of the futuristic-looking ‘Cybertruck’. He captioned the post, “A little something to help me run from the competition” followed by a duck emoji. According to a report shared on MotorTrend, the ‘Cyberbeast’ model is one of the fastest trucks on the market with a staggering 0-60 mph time of just 2.5 seconds!

But what about Jones’s caption? It could be speculated that the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion is taking jabs at the criticism he has received for pursuing a fight against Stipe Miocic while the interim title is currently held by Tom Aspinall. According to Jones’s former light-heavyweight rival, Alexander Gustafsson, there is no better fight for the British MMA star to secure his legacy in the sport than by defeating a legend like Jon Jones.

In an interview with Crypto Sports Betting, Gustaffson stated, “I understand why Tom wants to fight Jon, it’s because Jon is the GOAT, he is the biggest UFC star right now. If Tom was to beat Jon it would be bigger than winning any UFC belt.”

However, with Aspinall currently scheduled to defend his interim crown against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304, it remains to be seen if the title unification bout between the two heavyweight titans will happen as Jones has maintained that he is focused on the Stipe Miocic fight.  The former 2-time heavyweight champion, Miocic, has also recently indicated that he is ready to prove the doubters wrong when he steps into the cage against Jon Jones!

Stipe Miocic believes ‘Bones’ is “beatable”

Stipe Miocic has been away from the Octagon since 2021 when he lost his UFC heavyweight title to Francis Ngannou at UFC 260 via a vicious knockout. As such, after almost a 3-and-a-half-year break from active competition, questions have been raised about his chances against Jon Jones. But the Ohio native hasn’t let the doubts affect him as he recently affirmed his faith in his abilities to prevail over ‘Bones’.

In an interview with CBS Sport’s Shakiel Mahjouri, Miocic confessed, “Everyone thinks he’s going to beat my a**. I don’t like being told that. I like shutting people up. He’s beatable. I know he is. Anyone is beatable, and I will be the first to do this.” While Jones has affirmed that his return date is set for November 9th, there have been no official announcements regarding the same from the promotion.

Until then, fans and fighters alike remain on edge, speculating about what promises to be a historic clash in the heavyweight division. Do you think Jon Jones should be facing Tom Aspinall for a title unification bout when he returns? Or is the Stipe Miocic fight more crucial for ‘Bones’s legacy?
