Dana White's MMA Mount Rushmore pick—genius or just plain ridiculous? What's your take?

It seems like Dana White will never run out of praise for Jon Jones! In fact, the UFC boss is sure that the undisputed heavyweight champion doesn’t even get the respect he deserves when it comes to the P4P rankings. His reasoning? At the UFC 303 post-fight press conference, White was fired up as he proclaimed, “This f— guy destroyed the best heavyweight in the division. [He] easily made it look like nothing. Jon Jones is the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world and the greatest fighter f— ever. Period. End of story.”

So what did the UFC boss have to say this time? Well, it seems like he had to pick a bunch of fighters to determine his ‘Mount Rushmore’ of greatness. But was that really the case? In a story shared on his Instagram account, Jon Jones has come out and shed some more light on what the UFC boss’s criteria was to pick the names he did!

In the video shared on ‘Bones’ Instagram story, the UFC boss listed out a few names as he shared, “Jon Jones, you have to go with Ronda Rousey, you would have to put GSP (Georges St.Pierre) in there, absolutely positively Conor McGregor.” But with GSP and Rousey having retired from the sport, and McGregor still out of action after his UFC 303 bout’s cancellation against Michael Chandler, what exactly did the UFC boss mean when he chose these names?

According to the caption shared by ‘Bones’, “Big compliment from the boss, he’s not talking about the best fighters. He’s talking about fighters who changed the game”.  Conor McGregor turned MMA on its head with his incredible rise in the sport. The Irishman holds the record for the highest-grossing live gate for any UFC event with his fight against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in 2016 raking in over $17 million. Not just that, but ‘The Notorious’ is also the top PPV seller of all time with his UFC 229 clash against Khabib Nurmagomedov securing a reported 2.4 million buys as well.

As such, there’s no denying the fact that he did indeed, ‘change the game’. Ronda Rousey on the other hand was a trailblazer for women’s MMA as in 2012 she became the first female fighter to sign with the UFC. When it comes to Georges St.Pierre, the Canadian MMA legend also holds a spot in the Top 10 list of the highest live gates ever recorded by the UFC with his UFC 129 clash against Jake Shields netting a whopping $12 million considering that it happened all the way back in 2011.

The UFC boss putting Jon Jones in such lofty company tells us a lot about how he perceives the undisputed heavyweight champion. While Jones’s recent periods of inactivity have led to a lot of scrutiny by the fandom, it’s hard to deny his achievements as he became the youngest champion in UFC history at just 23 years old. Not just that, but Jones has only ever lost inside the Octagon once, and that too due to a disqualification over the illegal 12-6 elbow rule, which has now been reported to be on the way out soon.

White shuts down media members over Jones’s P4P rankings

Recently, during a post-event press conference following Dana White’s Contender Series 69, the UFC boss found himself in the midst of an intense debate. The topic? Who should hold the title of pound-for-pound best fighter in the world? His opponents? Veteran MMA media members, Kevin Iole and John Morgan.

White has staunchly maintained his stance about Jon Jones’s P4P greatness, which prompted Iole to jokingly ask if Jones had some sort of leverage over White to earn such high praise. The UFC boss laughed off the joke but stated, “Question me, who’s better than Jon Jones? Who’s pound-for pound better than Jon Jones?”

When Morgan brought up ‘Bones’s inactivity, White fired back by stating, “If Jon Jones was sitting on the couch saying, ‘I don’t know when I’m going to fight again,’ then he’s definitely not in the pound-for-pound discussion right now. He was scheduled to fight and he got injured. He’s an active fighter.”

Though the debate ended without a clear resolution, Dana White’s unwavering defense of Jones left no doubt in the room. In his eyes, Jon Jones remains the undisputed pound-for-pound king, even if the rest of the world isn’t so sure. But what about you?
