Conor McGregor has garnered the respect and admiration of a lot of fight fans. And one among the many was Sean O’Malley. However, with his habit of trash-talking on the internet, the Irishman has seemingly lost the admiration that ‘Suga’ held for him. With all the heat that has been emanating between McGregor and O’Malley, the fighting community even began speculating a fight between the two.

But one thing that the fight fans often wondered was how the bantamweight champion felt about his idol after the Irishman called him out for a spar. Well, O’Malley’s coach, Tim Welch, has an answer to that.

Will Sean O’Malley fight Conor McGregor under one condition?

On the 5th of August, 2024, Welch made an appearance on the ‘Submission Radio’. Therein, he was asked about what O’Malley felt now that his idol trashed him for failing a drug test long ago. Welch claimed that the respect was still there, “but it’s a little weird.” He revealed that the bantamweight champ used to watch McGregor’s highlights before stepping into the arena. It was all because of a mix of O’Malley’s respect for the Dubliner and his fighting prowess.

But the conversation soon shifted towards a matchup between ‘Suga’ and the ‘Mystic Mac’. O’Malley was a fighter from the bantamweight category, while McGregor, now buffed up, would apparently land in the welterweight division. With such a significant difference between their weight classes, the question of at what weight would the two face each other, if they ever do, kept boggling the fight fans’ minds. Weighing in on that, Welch had a response ready.

The coach said, “The only way it’d be possible is if they fought at 155 pounds. And, I mean, that’s not a- That’s a scary fight. Conor is huge, and he’s explosive, and he’s quick, and he’s got good reaction time. But right now, Sean is in his prime. His confidence is so high. He switches stances. His fight IQ is so high. So, to say that there’s no way we’d win that fight is stupid. There’s definitely ways we could win it, win that fight. But obviously, it’s a dangerous fight. He’s huge, he’s huge for Sean.”

Well, lightweight is naturally the only viable option for O’Malley to fight McGregor, don’t you think? Welch believed that O’Malley had a chance to claim a victory against the Irish mixed martial artist. But what does ‘Suga’ think of the matchup?

‘Suga’ exudes confidence against ‘The Notorious’

Talking about fighting his idol on his YouTube talk show, O’Malley confidently claimed that he could easily defeat McGregor. Even though the ‘Mystic Mac’ was bigger and stronger than him, the confidence was palpable. He said, “I will chirp Conor [McGregor] because I do believe I can beat Conor in a fight. I’m not just saying that, I think stylistically I could beat Conor in a fight…I wouldn’t call out somebody if I didn’t think I could beat them in a fight.”

Right after Ryan Garcia failed a drug test and tested positive for trace amounts of ostarine, McGregor took to X and bashed the boxer. Unfortunately, he also dragged in O’Mally and called both of them out for a full contact spar. Needless to say, it wasn’t well appreciated by ‘Suga’, and McGregor lost one of his biggest supporters.

Do you think O’Malley will ever get to fight McGregor? If so, who will rise victorious? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
