Is Jailton Almeida the next big thing in UFC, or is Serghei Spivac a step too far?

Serghei Spivac had a score to settle, and at UFC Vegas 95 he did just that! Taking on Marcin Tybura in a heavyweight clash, the fight was a rematch of their first encounter from 2020. Spivac had lost the bout via a unanimous decision on the night. Ahead of the rematch, in his interview with UFC.com, Spivac had revealed that, “What happened (in the first fight), happened. This is just the next fight. As I said before, a loss is still a lesson that I learned. It’s an experience that I’ve got. And then we do our work, we do our job, and we’ll see what happens stylistically.”

Keeping the loss in mind, this time he made sure that the fight didn’t go to the judges. The fight began with a burst of energy as Spivac wasted no time, launching a quick combination at Tybura. The intensity of the fight escalated as the action quickly moved to the mat. For a while, it appeared as though Spivac was in trouble because he lost position and Tybura got on top. However, ‘Polar Bear’ was determined to not let history repeat itself.

With patience and skill, Spivac executed a slick move, rolling into a flawless armbar. Tybura had no choice but to verbally submit, signaling the end of the fight in the very first round. This victory was particularly sweet for Spivac, who hadn’t stepped into the Octagon in nearly a year. His last appearance was in September 2023 at UFC Fight Night 226 in Paris where he suffered a TKO loss to Ciryl Gane. That setback didn’t keep him down, though. Spivac returned with a vengeance, showing why he’s a force to be reckoned with in the heavyweight division.

With this win, he’s now finished four of his last five opponents, a list that includes the formidable Derrick Lewis. After the win, Spivac didn’t have a particular name to target but made it clear to the UFC and boss Dana White that he’d like to fight up in the rankings next. Now, it appears that he has already found a heavyweight willing to step up to his challenge!

‘Malhadinho’ wants Dana White to give him the chance to test himself against ‘Polar Bear’

Jailton Almeida, currently holding the no. 7 spot in the division took to social media to indicate his interest in the fight. In a post shared on Instagram by MMA Fighting, Almeida’s callout read, “Spivak, do you want someone above you in the rankings? Im here!! #7 vs #8. I want to fight Bro! Happy you get the finish early, so, we can fight soon!” and also tagged Dana White and Mick Maynard to implore them to set up this fight!

Is Jailton Almeida the next big thing in UFC, or is Serghei Spivac a step too far?

Have an interesting take?

‘Malhadinho’ is currently 7-1 in the UFC with his lone setback coming against Curtis ‘Razor’ Blaydes at UFC 299 earlier this year. However, he has since bounced back with a statement-making first round submission finish over Alexander Romanov at UFC 302. Now, with the call-out made, the fans will be waiting to see if the UFC and Dana White give in to the demands and set up a heavyweight clash between the two titans.

With their impressive finishing skills, and Almeida boasting a 57% submission rate according to Tapology, the fight promises to be a display of elite heavyweight mixed martial arts.
