MMA is not a career, it is an opportunity. These were the words said by the CEO of UFC, Dana White back in 2020. His statements made headlines in the MMA world at the time. Some might argue that there is some truth to it. After all, a formidable fighter may be sacked from the company after a series of defeats.
That is precisely the case with another— a more recent fighter who was removed from the roster. Who is this fighter? Why has the UFC parted ways with him? Let’s uncover the answers.

In a recent turn of events, Malcolm Gordon, a flyweight fighter, has been dropped by the UFC. The 33-year-old had been in the UFC since 2020. After seven fights, he had only two victories. Moreover, in his last three fights, he was finished, that too, not by fighters in the top flight of the division. His last fight in the UFC took place just weeks ago at UFC 297.
In his last bout, he was defeated via submission by Jimmy Flick. Thereafter, the UFC felt that the fighter was arguably not formidable enough to be given opportunities in the organization and resorted to sacking him. A reliable account on ‘X’ tweeted this new revelation, “Fighter removed: Malcolm Gordon”
It is safe to say that Gordon may not be fighting under the UFC banner shortly. But does that mean he will not compete again? Not necessarily.

Several fighters have been sacked from the organization but made a comeback years later. Will he share a similar story? Let time reveal. However, if a fighter gets sacked after consecutive defeats, then is this a secure career? White would advise in the negative and so would Rogan.
Joe Rogan on MMA not being a secure career
According to White, opportunities in the sport are limited. Moreover, it is only limited to those who are at the top of the food chain. However, for most people, it is a chance to be exposed to the public and make the most of it when the time comes. Reflecting on the same, he stated, “MMA is not a career, it’s an opportunity. And you go out and make the most of your opportunity when you get the chance.”
Meanwhile, Rogan, a UFC commentator made it known that he agrees with the president and thinks it was very well-spoken. He stated, “That’s a beautiful statement.”
