Conor McGregor is bound to return sometime. Why? Because he is still under the UFC’s contract and no one can really leave without fulfilling the time they’re meant to fulfill. So when is he going to come back? Now that’s the tricky part of the whole ordeal.
First, we thought ‘The Notorious’ would return sometime in 2023. Then, the whole drama with USADA shook the UFC world with ease. No news about McGregor actually returning broke out in good time and eventually, we knew he was not making it that year. So will he make it this year?

The UFC makes sure that the fighters finish what’s on their contract before they can part ways. The contracts can be extended for a while and McGregor has been away from the cage since 2021. He broke his shin and couldn’t compete and is still yet to sign up for a fight.
Yes, he’s told everyone that he’ll be fighting Michael Chandler at middleweight on the 29th of June but Dana White has confirmed that he’s not heard anything from anyone important about it. That means one thing and one thing only, he fooled us, yet again.
Now, MMA veteran ‘Big’ John McCarthy believes that McGregor has to come back at some point because the contract forces him to. He sat down with his usual ‘Weighin In’ partner Josh Thomson and said, “there has to be a sunset clause on that eventually though”.
Thomson, on the other hand, believes that it is in fact the UFC that’s holding out on McGregor’s end. And that does make a little sense. Even the Irishman has previously claimed that the promotion isn’t giving him any fights but how can they? He’s yet to be cleared by the USADA and that won’t happen until around April. Here’s more of what Thomson said.

Josh Thomson is certain that McGregor won’t be making a comeback this year. On the same episode of the show, Thomson claimed that people had been assuming way too much with the Irishman’s return. Dana White himself denied anything regarding it and he told a press conference that when McGregor returns, he’ll know about it first.

So, has everyone been fooled by the Irishman’s usual antics? Perhaps assuming that he’s not going to come back this year either would be a bit of a stretch. However, Thomson also later told McCarthy how McGregor has been extended forever and so, while the UFC doesn’t necessarily have a “sunset” clause so to speak of, perhaps fans’ patience wearing thin would help.
