Conor McGregor's tribute to 9/11 victims—does this show a new, more mature side of him?

11th September marks a dark day for the whole wide world. With around 3000 people losing their lives, in the terror attack on the trade towers, the heart still aches at just the mention of the date. But Conor McGregor has kept trying to ease that pain with his actions every single year on this date. He actively donates to charities promising to help everyone who lost their loved ones in the cowardly attack.

‘Mystic Mac’ didn’t back down this time, and announced his presence in New York, to honor the lives lost about 2 decades earlier. The Irish star took to social media and released a couple of pictures. The first one had an art of the World Trade Center with the American flag behind the buildings. And the words, “NEVER FORGET” blazed beside the towers. The second image declared that he would participate in the Charity Day 2024 and donate to the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund.

In the caption, the former UFC double champion wrote, “I am humbled to spend September 11 in New York City honoring the legacy of the 2,977 people lost on that day in 2001. This year, I look forward to joining Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund’s Charity Day, raising funds for causes that help to improve lives.”

But in 2021, the Irish mixed martial artist flew to New York with his family to pay tribute to the lost lives. He said, “We’re flying into New York City here tonight on the 20-year anniversary of 9/11. I just want to pour a round of this glass of Proper 12 and remember this for the people that 20 years ago lost their lives, for the people that fought to save lives, and for the many families that were impacted and still are impacted by this. I wanted to say, may we never forget?” He continued,  “I want to even say on the 20-year anniversary that we all collectively renew the pact to never forget.”

McGregor also donated a hefty sum of $1.2 million to the first responders. This was the amount he totaled off of his premium Irish whiskey brand, Proper 12. With $5 off of every case, he assured that the team would also provide some aid to the families and children of the people who lost their lives in the line of duty.

As the tragic incident turns 22 years old, the wound inflicted by the terror attack still bleeds fresh. But with the support provided by stars like McGregor, these wounds can look up to be tended and ultimately heal.
