Michael Chandler has been waiting for the much-awaited clash for quite some time now. However, McGregor surprised everyone when he claimed that he would be fighting him in the 185-pound division. Although Chandler took on the challenge, Cormier feels this would hamper his chance of winning the belt at the lightweight division. Chandler is the fifth-ranked lightweight in the division and fighting against a formidable opponent might just help him get a title fight.

Cormier, while speaking to Ryan Clark in a recent YouTube video, said, “RC, I am telling you that Michael Chandler still has championship ideas in his mind, and competitively, he is taking a step back. Because reality is this: When you watch who Dustin’s fighting now, Benoit Saint-Denis, and when you see who Charles Oliveira is fighting now, Arman Tsarukyan, there is still Fiziev out there. If you fight Fiziev and beat Fiziev now, you are back on a shortlist because no fight is going to get him a title fight right now. But there are fights that are going to get him closer, and I believe those fights, competitively, would move him closer to a championship opportunity. There’s only one person who can go into that fight between those two, Ryan, and truly put himself on a short list to fight for a championship, and that’s Conor McGregor.”

Will Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler finally happen?

The rivalry between McGregor and Chandler started way back in their TUF(The Ultimate Fighter) season 31. However, the pair is yet to face off in the Octagon after “The Notorious” delayed his return. McGregor has been out of action for more than three years and is now set to make a comeback. The former two-division champion has shown his keen interest in taking on Chandler. The UFC CEO Dana White is yet to make any official announcement as of yet. The pair was previously scheduled to meet at UFC 300, but that seems to be a far-fetched dream.
