Has Conor McGregor finally had enough? The Irishman has been making the fans wait for a real and final announcement of his actual return. On the 1st of January, everyone thought that he did give us a date, but it was all in vain as Dana White confirmed it later with a firm “no” and very little to add after the denial.

White did tell the press that they will know when McGregor is actually going to return, but is there something hidden in plain sight? Is Dana White the one holding out on McGregor’s return because he has some interesting plans waiting in his back pocket? Either way, it seems like he’s finally gotten on the Irishman’s nerves.

Not that he’s known for being a very calming personality, Conor McGregor recently took to Instagram stories to address his return. “Get this f*cking date set” – he captioned his story without mincing words, along with a video clip of him ranting at TUF 31, a season dominated by Michael Chandler and his team.

“Give them three rounds, lads! We want three-rounders here, judges, yeah?” Conor McGregor demanded in the old resurfaced video. “F*** this two-rounds — It’s five rounds for a world title! You ever had one of those world titles Michael? You ever had a five-rounder?”

Perhaps taunting Michael Chandler was just a start for McGregor, who would go on to ensure that the two have a rivalry that would outlive TUF 31. However, now it has been a while since the season ended and a match with the two of them inside the cage has not come to.

Theories and assumptions have gone wide for months now. McGregor’s announcement fell flat and people started theorizing that he’s not coming back at all. But his new demand to the UFC points in an odd direction. The fighter has previously complained about the UFC not giving him a fight. This was at the ‘Day of Reckoning’ boxing event in December 2023 when ‘The Notorious’ sat right next to soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, is it actually the UFC’s fault or is there something larger at play here?

MMA insider on McGregor’s contract

Josh Thomson of the ‘Weighin In’ podcast on YouTube believes that it is, in fact, the UFC that’s holding out McGregor’s contract. In a recent episode, Thomson was joined by his usual co-host, ‘Big’ John McCarthy and he detailed how the fighter is likely not returning this year and the UFC is extending his contract. It may make sense since the former champion has been missing from action since his injury back in 2021.

McCarthy argued that there has to be some sort of a “sunset clause” on McGregor’s contract that could compel him to come forward faster and actually make the comeback a reality. But if Thomson is the one who’s right, then without Dana White’s say-so, nothing can be done about it. What will McGregor do if he gets too anxious about his own return? Will he return soon? Only Dana White could answer these questions.
