Is Jon Jones dodging Tom Aspinall, or is Cormier just stirring the pot for some drama?

Will Tom Aspinall ever get his hands on Jon Jones? Daniel Cormier believes so! The ex-UFC heavyweight champion recently took a closer look at the heavyweight title picture, examining the probabilities of this dream fight coming to fruition. If the Hall of Famer is to be believed, the chances of this fight happening might be stronger than you think!

Aspinall will defend his interim HW title against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 at the end of this month. This is an important time for him because he’s returning to the octagon after giving a KO to Sergei Pavlovich for the title in November 2023. Meanwhile, the recent buzz is that Jon Jones will eventually get the  Stipe Miocic fight at UFC 309 in November at MSG. According to Cormier, UFC 304 could derail Jones’ plans for a GOAT vs. GOAT fight and give the fans what they want to see. Let’s dive into his perspective.

Daniel Cormier recently shared his ideas on a showdown between Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones. The former UFC two-division champion gave fans a heads-up on what would happen if Tom Aspinall could defeat Curtis Blaydes and pressure Dana White to book a fight between him and Jones. Aspinall is going to face Blaydes at UFC 304 in Manchester, England later this month. The heavyweight is already interested in a bout against Jones however he has more chances of facing Stipe Miocic before that.

In the recent YouTube video, DC said that there might be a scenario where UFC could be forced to match up Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones. He expected a public uproar if Aspinall could defeat Blaydes. He said, “Could you image if Tom Aspinall just washes out Curtis Blaydes? Then the firestorm that would start to gather for him to fight Jones… For there to truly be an uprising, it would have to be Aspinall destroying Blaydes. Only because of this, you’ve seen Curtis Blaydes lose before… But if Aspinall goes through Blaydes in the way that he did Sergei [Pavlovich]… People would lose their minds, almost insisting that he and Jones fight.”

DC said that if Aspinall can get through this fight while also keeping his dominance then, “ UFC would be forced” to make “Jones versus Aspinall” happen. Of the current top five heavyweights, Jones has beaten Gane, and Aspinall has already finished Sergei Pavlovich. This just leaves Curtis Blaydes and Alexander Volkov as potential suitors for Jones other than Aspinall. So, with a win over Blaydes, Aspinall will have beaten two of the top 5 contenders, making him all the more eligible than the #6 ranked Miocic, who has not fought since dropping the title to Francis Ngannou in March 2021.

Cormier even mentioned whether Stipe Miocic would be fine with it. This is because Miocic had explained his stance in a recent interview with Shakiel Mahjouri. He spoke about Aspinall’s frustration with the fight against Jones and he also declared that he was fine with walking away if UFC decided not to match up him and Jon Jones.

Stipe Miocic addressed Tom Aspinall’s chances with Jon Jones

In the same interview, he also spoke about his own interaction with Jones comparing it with Aspinall’s interaction with the P4P champ. His interaction with Jones was more polite rather than Aspinall and the heavyweight champ’s conversations. Miocic sympathized with ‘Honey Badger’, and said,  “Yeah, I mean, I get it. And I mean, I feel the same way but I’m not taking any way from him. The UFC can do what they want. It is what it is. There’s only one guy I want to fight and that’s Jon Jones but at the same time, the UFC can pick who they want to fight.”

‘The Silencer’ was not happy with how things were between him and Jones. Miocic declared that he did feel helpless with the uncertainty surrounding his fight with the latter. He also mentioned that he was not holding up the division and also explained how the fans were, “crying and stuff.”

On top of that Jones is in the crosshairs with many of UFC’s top contenders and fighters like Alexander Volkov has indicated his interest in fighting the man who is considered a GOAT by many. Meanwhile, Miocic was supposedly going to fight Aspinall at UFC 300 but declined because he only wanted to go against Jones.

Even after the uncertain circumstances of his battle with Jones, he gave fans hope and said that the fight might be happening on November 9. Do you think Cormier might be right and ultimately Jones and Aspinall would fight?
