Islam Makhachev thinks he is invincible. The reigning lightweight champion is coming off a fantastic first-round head-kick KO of Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 294. This spectacular performance silenced his critics and proved once and for all that he is the best fighter in the UFC.

And the UFC world seems to agree with this, having ranked the Dagestani #1 in the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings. However, the Dagestani seems to be unsatisfied with this laurel and has recently claimed in a interview that no one would actually be able to beat him.

Islam Makhachev took to Twitter and gave his thoughts on talks surrounding promising lightweight prospect Arman Tsarukyan. The latter flattened #4-ranked Beneil Dariush at UFC Fight Night Austin earlier this week in the first round. Now, he is being seen as a strong title contender, even though he fought and lost to Makhachev four years ago in April 2019.

However, as Tsarukyan himself admitted, he was very young—just 22—then and has evolved and gotten much better as a fighter since then. And while many in the MMA world think their rematch would be a compelling matchup, Makhachev disagrees.

The Dagestani took to social media and made clear his thoughts on what he thought of his competition. In a tweet in which he tagged the UFC and ESPN, Makhachev boldly and confidently (some would say even arrogantly) claimed that while the top prospects in the lightweight division were good fighters, they were not good enough to beat him. He named Tsarukyan, #2 ranked Justin Gaethje, #3 ranked Dustin Poirier, and #1 ranked Charles Oliveira among those he felt were not good enough to beat him.

“Arman, Dustin, Justin, Charles they all good, they’re TOP 5 in the world, but none of them will get the belt, while I’m here. That’s it! @ufc @espnmma,” the reigning UFC lightweight champion tweeted. And while we will most probably see Makhachev fight Oliveira next, it seems a Tsarukyan fight is still a long way off, according to his coach.

Makhachev’s coach thinks Tsarukyan fight’s still a long way off

Islam Makhachev’s coach, Javier Mendez, spoke about a possible Makhachev-Tsarukyan rematch. The Mexican-American admitted that their first fight was a tough one for the Dagestani. He felt the UFC would be able to weave a compelling storyline around the potential fight to create excitement and hype for the fight.

However, Mendez thinks the fight is still a long way off since “too many people ahead of him [Tsarukyan]. And I think Justin Gaethje and Charles [Oliveira] are ahead of him,” the coach said in a recent interview. What do you think about Islam Makhachev’s tweet? Let us know in the comments section below.
