Leaving out Jon Jones and Khabib from the GOAT list—blasphemy or justified?

Like almost all of us, Michael Bisping also has his favorites when it comes to mixed martial arts. In that regard, the former UFC middleweight champion was encouraged to share his list of fighters who should be on the Mount Rushmore of MMA. Mixed martial arts is still a very young sport, but even with that in mind, choosing just four names and faces to fill an MMA Mount Rushmore is no easy feat.

However, the former UFC middleweight champion had some interesting picks. Of course, all of the usual names were thrown into the mix, like Georges St-Pierre and Gracie Royce; he skipped the names of Jon Jones and Khabib Nurmagomedov from the GOAT list and added Anderson Silva and Chuck Liddell as his final picks.

This would surely be shocking for many since Jon Jones (27-1-0) and Khabib Nurmagomedov (29-0-0) are names that make the list almost every time someone mentions the greatest fighters to ever grace the Octagon. So this list surely would’ve disappointed a majority of the fans. On X, Bisping wrote, “Gsp, Anderson, Royce, chuck. I think.”

In fact, even Dana White would be disappointed, as it is a well-known fact by now that White is a huge fan of Jon Jones and would definitely pick him as his GOAT out of all the MMA fighters in existence. Jon Jones has been one of the most dominant forces in the sport, and apart from being the current UFC heavyweight champion, he is already a Hall of Famer.

However, there was another name that did not make the list. One of the MMA superstars who truly has brought a lot of attention to the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC. Who is it? Well, it’s none other than the Notorious. A name that Bisping skipped even the last time when he named his MMA goats.

Bisping skips out on McGregor twice

What’s your perspective on:

Leaving out Jon Jones and Khabib from the GOAT list—blasphemy or justified?

Have an interesting take?

The other time Bisping made the GOAT list was on a recent episode of his Believe You Me podcast. And even then, he skipped on McGregor as one of the greats. Something that might’ve shocked many fans. While he may not have the same resume or longevity as some of the other names under consideration, MMA wouldn’t be what it is today without input from the great “The Notorious.”

The impact the first simultaneous two-division champion in UFC history has had is simply incomparable when you look at the money and attention he’s attracted. Bisping made his case by raising the question of what the debate will look like in the distant future, and looking at the fighter roster from that angle, there’s no chance McGregor won’t be a first-round pick.

It’s not yet clear what Conor McGregor will do next. Some believe that he will keep his word and return to the octagon, while others believe that it is more likely that he will never fight again. Either way, this is someone who has completely changed the game. He’s had a lot of controversies along the way, and there may be more to come, but in terms of passion for the sport, it seems like he’s still there. Whom would you name in your MMA Mount Rushmore?
