The UFC welterweight division is a bit noisy at the moment, with top contenders like Colby Covington, Belal Muhammad, and Gilbert Burns all asking for fights. After the champion Leon Edwards defended his title at UFC 286 in London, Dana White declared Colby Covington the next contender.

However, this did not sit well with Muhammad who is currently on an 8-fight win streak. Despite his disappointment at being denied a title shot, Muhammad was willing to settle for a fight against either Covington or Kamaru Usman. Interestingly, Gilbert Burns also entered the scene after his recent win over Jorge Masvidal at UFC 287.

UFC 288 scheduled for May 6th lost its co-main event after Charles Oliveira pulled out due to injury. Both Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad have been chirping at each other on Twitter about filling in the spot. However, the two cannot seem to agree on a weight class for the bout.

Meanwhile, Burns also floated the idea of fighting Dustin Poirer at UFC 288 at 170lbs. ‘The Diamond’ confessed he was not in fighting shape but added he could make weight and enter the cage for the right price.

Now, UFC legend Chael Sonnen has chimed in with his take on the confusion at welterweight.

Chael Sonnen’s take on the Belal Muhammad-Gilbert Burns-Dustin Poirier situation

In a recent video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Chael Sonnen addressed the situation between Belal Muhammad, Gilbert Burns, and Dustin Poirier. The former UFC title challenger summed up the situation in his typical fashion and gave his verdict.

Sonnen said that Muhammad did not have the luxury to sit around and wait for a title shot as he was not a clear number-one contender. However, he added that ‘Remember the Name’ had something big coming for him.

He said, “I believe Belal has an opponent already, which is either Kamaru [Usman] or [Shavkat] Rakhmonov, which will be a number one contender’s match no matter what Dustin and Gilbert do or decide to do or how that outcome goes. That’s my understanding.”

Sonnen also added that Burns would not earn a shot at Belal Muhammad for the same reason. Therefore, according to the 46-year-old, Burns fighting Poirier, or anybody for that matter, does not improve his title fight prospects at the moment.
