Charles Oliveira missed his opportunity to become a two-time UFC lightweight champion when Islam Makhachev submitted him at UFC 280 last year. Just days ago, he missed another shot at the title when he injured himself ahead of his scheduled bout against Makhachev at UFC 294. In summary, Does any of this somehow indicate that Oliveira may not be fully prepared for the Dagestani?

‘Do Bronx’ has defeated every top fighter in the current lightweight division including Beneil Dariush, Justin Gaethje, and Dustin Poirier. One can make a case that there is no one on the current roster as worthy as the Brazilian to have a title shot next. Former UFC fighter and analyst Chael Sonnen, however, disagrees. He recently gave his honest opinion on Oliveira’s rematch with Makhachev.

Charles Oliviera convincingly lost to Islam Makhachev in their first fight. Makhachev submitted Oliveira in the second round to get hold of the lightweight belt. It came as a shock to Olieveira and even to the combat community as ‘Do Bronx’ was known to be the submission king who held the record of most submission wins in the history of UFC.

UFC legend Chael Sonnen thinks that Oliveira is not in the mood to face Makhachev. While having a conversation in one of his recent YouTube videos. He expresses his unwillingness to witness an Oliveira-Makhachev rematch. Sonnen said, “DraftKings wants the world to know that there’s nothing to see here. They changed the odds from 3 to 1 to 4 to 1. Charles did three interviews on Islam that I saw, and in all three, he said, ‘I’m not going to do the fight.'”

‘The American Gangster’ continued, “He even made it about the date, saying, ‘I could do it another time, but I can’t do it then.’ But he got very specific, saying, ‘I’m not going to do the fight.’ To this day, I have not seen an interview where Charles said he was. Now, it might be out there but don’t think you have to shove that up my a**,” said Chael Sonnen.

He further added, “Three times I heard Charles say, “I’m not going to fight Islam in October.” I have never heard Charles say that he was going to fight Islam in October. I know there was an announcement, and I know agreements were signed, but I didn’t get that announcement from Charles.”

Oliveira had revealed after UFC 289 that he was not ready for the October turnaround. However, he signed the bout agreement for UFC 294 eventually. Following the fight announcement, the former champion had also claimed he was initially leaning away from facing Makhachev in Abu Dhabi for a second time. As his bittersweet fate would have it, his injury granted his wish. While Sonnen is playing around with these narratives, Dana White has a different opinion regarding the fate of the lightweight division.

Dana White has a contradictory opinion to that of Chael Sonnen. As per White, no one in the current roster is as deserving as Charles Oliveira for a title fight. While having a post-fight press conference, a reporter asked about the fate of the lightweight division and asked whether Justin Gaethje deserves a chance for the title shot. White claimed otherwise.

White, in his statement, said, ” Listen, you’ve got to give it to Oliveira. Oliveira is ready to go; unfortunately, he got a cut. I think we give it to Oliveira. But again, these are all questions that I really can’t answer right now. We get home, we figure it out, and see what’s next for everybody.”
