Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane was a historic fight for many reasons. It marked the heavyweight debut of Jones. What was even more impressive was how quickly and easily Jones disposed of Gane and won the vacant 265 lbs title. But, according to a UFC legend and former title challenger, your memories are lying and your eyes may have deceived you about the events of that night.
Former UFC middleweight and light heavyweight title challenger Chael Sonnen recently made some surprising claims about Jones vs Gane. ‘The Gangster’ from the mean streets of West Linn, Oregon, was discussing a different subject on his YouTube channel when he gave a new interesting insight into the UFC 285 main event. The 45-year-old was talking about the possibility of UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira fighting Jon Jones at heavyweight when he discussed Jones’ most recent exploits.

In a recent video uploaded to his channel, Sonnen discussed the possibility of Alex Pereira moving up to heavyweight, as revealed by his teammate Glover Teixeira. While discussing the possibility of the Brazilian fighting Jones and Jones’ grappling advantages, he made some new claims about Jones vs. Gane.
He said, “In Jon’s most recent fight, where he had a decorated professional kickboxer, Jon never tried to take him down once. And I know your lying memories tell you Jon took him down right away. That’s your lying memories.” He continued, “Jon never tried to take him down once. That takedown that Jon got, no one was more surprised than Jon. He didn’t put an effort into that.”
Sonnen further added, “Jon was pushing the pace. Jon was walking forward. You had Ciryl [Gane] running away from Jon. It was shocking. It was absolutely shocking. A heavyweight should not even care if he’s hit by a light heavyweight… I’m not saying he should take it flush. But shouldn’t even care. He should never step back.”
