The critics of USADA are plenty, and it’s a list that keeps growing longer. Recently, the organization announced its exit from the UFC’s anti-doping program. And it wasn’t an announcement that was sweet or short. In fact, the parting of ways looked pretty bitter on both ends of the deal.

After sour adjectives from Jeff Novitzky and Dana White, a new UFC veteran has words for the USADA. This time around, the former fighter gave very heartfelt advice to the USADA. And if he’s to be believed, this isn’t the first time he’s talked to them about it.

Chael Sonnen’s advice fell on deaf ears

Chael Sonnen has been with the UFC for decades now. His career brought him endless fame, and now he enjoys a wide audience on his YouTube channel. Sonnen was perhaps the only one who wasn’t convinced by the Khamzat Chimaev vs. Paulo Costa card. In fact, the legend was convinced the fight was in danger, and he turned out to be correct. In a new video, Sonnen opened up about his advice to the USADA.

“I have cautioned USADA a number of times- stop speaking, stop. You do not need to be heard. And it’s a piece that they never understood, and they’ve never agreed with me,” said Sonnen. “it’s not how we do it here… Stop coming out and talk about the athletes… we don’t have referees that make statements. We don’t have judges that do interviews… It’s very important keeping up with the culture of our industry that you do your job.”

Clearly, Sonnen had his problems with the USADA before. The drug testing agency has worked with the UFC for about eight years now. It was obvious during their exit that the agreement wasn’t nearly as mutual as they would have liked it to be.

In fact, USADA CEO Travis Tygart accused UFC leaders of making their relationship “untenable” over the course of the last couple of months. Especially after their firm stance on Conor McGregor‘s testing before his fight against Michael Chandler became public. Now, USADA has been replaced.

Who replaced USADA, and when will they step in?

USADA will now be replaced by Drug-Free Sport International. A testing agency that is trusted by the likes of the NFL and FIFA. The announcement was made the very next day after USADA accused Joe Rogan of stalling their relationship with the UFC. McGregor has also been publicly unhappy with the USADA, calling it a “garbage” organization. Rogan lent his support to ‘The Notorious’ during one of his podcast episodes.

Even Dana White called the USADA’s statement a “dirty sc*mbag move” against the UFC. Clearly, things are not going well with the two organizations. Drug-Free Sport International will soon take up the reins and begin working with the UFC from 2024 onwards. Do you think this move will make things better for the athletes?
