Sean Strickland and Dricus Du Plessis promised a war coming into the fight at UFC 297, and they delivered one. Both fighters ended the fight looking like they tried to maul each other inside the octagon, with bruises and cuts covering their faces. Nonetheless, a recent update revealed that Strickland’s injury might be more severe than Du Plessis’.
The two had an absolute slugfest, but the South African came out on top with a win over the American with a split decision, allowing him to wrap the gold around his waist to become the new middleweight champion. Both looked absolutely battered after the fight and Strickland posted a reel on his Instagram, updating the fans regarding the gash.

The former middleweight champ put on one hell of a performance to try to regain his belt. However, the South African turned out to be the better man the night of the fight. However, Strickland believed that he had done enough to secure the win against Du Plessis. ‘Stillknocks’ bore a nasty gash on the left eye of ‘Tarzan’ during the first minute of round four. This left the 32-year-old with impaired vision for the remainder of the fight.
He posted an Instagram reel updating fans about the horrific injury he sustained during the fight. The reel, however, has a caption that had Strickland venting out his frustration with the accidental headbutt and how it affected his performance throughout the fight. The cut was revealed to have been more severe than expected.
In the caption, Strickland wrote, “I didn’t take the cowards way out and tell the doctor I couldn’t see and got a no contest.. The only reason why you took a round from me is because I couldn’t see.. I won that fight, the world knows I won that fight….. The belt they gave you will never make you a champion, enjoy. They had to stitch through muscle to get it closed.” He concluded by thanking everyone and telling the fans how their support has helped him keep his head high.
