The former UFC interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier finished Benoit Saint-Denis in the second round after brutally knocking the Frenchman out in the second round. Given the caliber of fighter Poirier is, most people didn’t feel too surprised seeing him beat the rising contender. However, there were some who believed that “God of War” didn’t fight to his full potential.

There were quite a lot of people who believed that the Frenchman was suffering from a staph infection coming into his fight at UFC 299. Benoit Saint-Denis would go on to confirm the fan’s assumption of his poor performance against Poirier.

During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani in “The MMA Hour”, Saint-Denis explained what he was going through as he was nearing the fight week for UFC 299. While most people would’ve pulled out, the 28-year-old decided to bite down and go through the event. Here is why he went forward with the fight.

During the interview with Ariel Helwani, Saint-Denis Stated, “It was two days. Two days before leaving France, last Friday was the last time session. I have been leaving Saturday. And but you know, out of respect for everybody, you have to take treatment right? When you when you notice something like that. So I called a few of course a doctor and we try to figure out a process to try to be in the best shape possible and to make the fight happen and to be in the fight shape that is good enough to be respectable for your opponent to give the people the fight they want to see because you as a Co-main event of such a huge fight.”

Even though, “God Of War” is disappointed with his loss to Dustin Poirier, The Frenchman remains grateful for the overwhelming support he has received from his countrymen and MMA fans. As for Dustin Poirier, the win over Benoit might have possibly landed him a title shot.

Dustin Poirier knocking out Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299 was something not many expected. At least not in the fashion of finish. This gained the respect of fight fans across the world, even that of Ali Abdelaziz, who took to Twitter to suggest that “The Diamond” should be next in line for the UFC lightweight strap.

In his tweet, Abdelaziz wrote,“Dustin Poirier took a huge risk tonight and came out on top and looked amazing. Dustin vs @MAKHACHEVMMA in June especially since everyone else has fights. If the UFC is good with this then Islam would be game.”
