Brandon Royval: Hero or reckless? Would you chase a shooter like he did?

UFC middleweight Anthony Hernandez told reporters something shocking that happened during the day. Hernandez’s teammate and former UFC flyweight title contender Brandon Royval chased a shooter and got him caught after the perp shot someone near the UFC stars’ hotel.

And this news has come as a shock to everyone, including UFC CEO Dana White. White was told about the tale by a reporter at the UFC 307 post-fight press conference. “Behind the cameras Alexander Hernandez told us today that this morning he saw a shooting on the street. And Brandon Royval went and chased the shooter and I guess caught, they caught the shooter. I’m wondering if you heard of that and if you think that’s a smart idea?” the reporter said.

To which a puzzled UFC CEO asked: “Our guys caught the shooter?” The media member then clarified that Royval didn’t actually catch the shooter, but followed him and helped the police arrest him: “He was on the phone with 911 but they  [the police] caught the shooter.” Dana White was gobsmacked at this “Holy s—t!” he exclaimed.

While Dana White was initially a bit shocked by the whole story, he did seem quite proud of the flyweight star and his exploits. “It’s weird how much this happens to our guys,” the UFC CEO said beaming. However, it may not have been the best move for Brandon Royval to do that since he is gearing up for a cracking clash against a young and hungry talent.

Brandon Royval vs Tatsuro Taira set for a week after UFC 307

Brandon Royval is set to face #5ranked flyweight on the UFC Fight Night Vegas card next weekend. On the main event no less. Now Royval is looking to bounce back and make his way back up the division for another shot at the UFC gold.

After all, the Colorado native is still ranked #1 in the division. But that is exactly what makes the Taira fight so dangerous for him. Taira, of course, is a prodigal talent, who is 24, unbeaten, and already ranked #5 in the division. If the Japanese wunderkind can beat Royval at The Apex, he will almost definitely be next in line for a title shot.
