‘The Joe Rogan Experience‘ provides intriguing technical breakdowns, hot takes on various issues, and interesting anecdotes. And therefore, it remains the staple source of entertainment for MMA fans, as evidenced by its 11 million listeners per episode. In one of the most recent episodes, the host, Joe Rogan explained why 12-6 elbows are still illegal in UFC: the move that resulted in Jon Jones‘ only loss inside the Octagon.
In JRE #1885, the color commentator sat with two former Navy SEAL officers, Andy Stump & Mike Sarraile. The trio touched upon various issues like MMA Fighters Union, Gordon Ryan, Navy SEAL training, and hell week.

Joe Rogan revealed why 12-6 elbows were illegal
In one segment of the episode, the trio discussed how the cage work looked boring to outsiders. Following this, Rogan put forth an argument of adding more weapons like knee to head while on the ground to make it more appealing. However, the UFC commentator himself dismissed the argument by referring to Mark Coleman. He pointed out that Coleman stopped a lot of guys in Pride in safe positions.
Joe Rogan then explained that cage fighting was the last bastion of chaos in combat sports. The former ‘Fear Factor’ host then described why 12-6 elbows were illegal, which made no sense according to him. Despite being illegal, they were not even the most strong elbow kinetically.
The 55-year-old stand-up comic then went on to describe why they were prohibited. He repeatedly mentioned that banning it was ‘dumb’. Rogan said, “Big John, in the early days, you know, he was a martial artist, had black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. Had to go, because he was the referee, had to go in front of these athletic commissions and talk them about sports and try to convince these people to approve it.”
“And one of these f******g normies, they didn’t like that people can break bricks on TV, like on ESPN you see those karate demonstrations. ‘Oh, we can’t have that, people can break bricks like that, they can kill people.’ … ‘Ok, we’ll make that move illegal, that’s fine,” he further added.
Lastly, Rogan concluded, “12-6 elbow is illegal to this day and it’s a remanent of ignorance. That’s all it is. Doesn’t make any sense. That’s a f***ing legitimate move.”
This is not the first time Joe Rogan discussed the 12-6 elbow rule. Similarly, almost 4 years ago, the famous TV presenter sat with Big John McCarthy and voiced the same issue.
Jon Jones and his only Octagon loss
Jon ‘Bones’ Jones holds an impressive MMA record, 26-1-0 (1 NC). His only loss came in his fourth UFC fight via disqualification. Significantly, the former UFC champion dominated the fight against Matt Hamill at The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale in 2009.
