Joe Rogan's comedy roots over MMA expertise—Did UFC make the right call?

For over 20 years, UFC commentator and podcast host Joe Rogan has built an iconic reputation in the promotion world with his lively and humorous style, captivating fans to the point where a pay-per-view event feels incomplete without him. But this dynamic podcaster wasn’t always part of the UFC’s journey, he came on board later.

Recently, a Rogan fan took to X, tagging UFC co-founder Campbell McLaren and questioning why they didn’t bring Joe Rogan on board from the jump instead of Brian Kilmeade. Campbell clapped back with his reasoning, setting the record straight.

Recently, UFC co-creator Campbell McLaren lost his cool when a fan on X tried to teach him how to do his job. The fan argued that Joe Rogan should have been hired earlier for his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expertise, which would have brought more value to the commentary team. The tweet said, “could have been on the booth educating folks on the inside and outs of BJJ years beforehand but SEG thought Brian Kilmeade would be better for some reason and you’re trying to brag about it LOL.”

Upon seeing the tweet, McLaren stepped in to set the record straight and took a jab at the fan, suggesting they were benefiting from hindsight in recognizing Joe Rogan’s potential. Campbell McLaren highlighted that he, too, was learning during the early days of the UFC, which was his first foray into MMA. “The early UFC’s were learning process for everyone. You have the benefit of hindsight, which is always 20/20,” McLaren said.

The co-creator also clarified that Rogan’s BJJ expertise wasn’t a major factor for him, Instead, he was impressed by Rogan’s stand-up comedy background, adding, “It was my tv comedy background that enabled me to pick Rogan and Brian Kilmeade who was an aspiring comedian back then. I started UFC in 1993. Dana came in 2000.”

Even fans were upset about the UFC’s choice to go with Brian Kilmeade, whose stint with the UFC was brief, serving as the main commentator for UFC 2 and UFC 3 before moving on to other projects, This isn’t the first time Campbell McLaren has recently spoken about Joe Rogan, though. Interested in Rogan’s friendship with Dana White, McLaren earlier this month highlighted something significant about Rogan. Let’s find out what it was.

Campbell McLaren clears up Rogan hiring confusion

UFC’s vibrant commentator Joe Rogan isn’t just an ordinary figure in the promotion. His close friendship with UFC head honcho Dana White solidified his standing, especially evident during some past controversies. Former example, when UFC board members considered removing Rogan over his use of the ‘N’ word, Dana White intervened, threatening to resign if Rogan was let go.

Although that controversy has since faded, Rogan has continued to discuss how Dana White hired him. Recently, McLaren seemed to take issue with these comments, subtly expressing his lack of enthusiasm for Rogan’s relationship with White. He left a gentle reminder about his role in Rogan’s hiring, saying, “ I sincerely wonder if, like Biden, @joerogan is having memory lapses. Joe seems to have forgotten it was me, not Dana White, that hired him.”
