Sean O’Malley can knock out anyone he wants. But will he dare to go up against the current featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski? In a recently surfaced video, ‘Suga’ talks about going up in his weight class under one singular condition. The moment ‘The Great’ is no longer the champ, O’Malley can try moving divisions.
Call it what you will. Fear or respect, ‘Suga’ understands the impact Volkanovski has made on the featherweight division over the years. He’s now held the belt for three years, and it still looks like he won’t go down anytime soon. So, is Sean O’Malley’s decision well-founded?

Let’s look at it this way. Sean O’Malley just recently got crowned the bantamweight champion after defeating Aljamain Sterling. The fight lasted just about two rounds, and ‘Suga’ won by a great margin. This is the first time the Boston native has held a belt. Volkanovski, on the other hand, became champ in 2019 and is yet to be dethroned after defending the title five times.

O’Malley’s concern in this way is certainly logical. The Australian champion of the featherweight division is often considered the greatest featherweight there has ever been. Moving your weight class up to fight the best of the best is a little bit more ambitious than ‘Suga’ wants to be right now. In a recent conversation, he was asked if he was considering moving up divisions, and he had this to say,
“I would love to, when Alexander Volkanovski isn’t the champ,” said ‘Suga’. “That motherfu*ker is pound for pound the best in the world right now.” At the same time, O’Malley was confident that he could take anyone down in due time. “I mean I’m confident I can knock anyone out. I feel like I could definitely knock Alexander Volkanovski out. It’d be fu*king very very difficult. I mean maybe in a year or two he’s still there I would do it but I think he’s moving up to 155.”
As usual, ‘Suga’ talks logic into his ideas. Moving up to 145 just to get potentially mauled by ‘The Great’ wouldn’t be a very pretty sight for a champ who’s not yet prepared for the fight. Both O’Malley and Volkanovski have shown a desire to be champions 0f multiple divisions.

On the other end of the spectrum, Volkanovski’s grip around the featherweight title has only gotten tighter after he snatched it from Max Holloway at UFC 245. The absolute demon of a fighter last defended the title against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290 in July 2023. So will his reign continue flawlessly by the time ‘Suga’ is ready to face him, or will ‘The Great’ fall? Who can take him down for good? Let us know in the comments.
