UFC 306 is perhaps going to be the most special card in the promotion’s history, not necessarily because of the fights on there! Although there are some cracking fights on it, the spotlight sure is on the venue.’The Sphere’ in Las Vegas is, without a doubt, the most unique and ultra-modern live event venue in the world. Its reported $2 billion construction cost, which is more than some countries’ GDP, boasts of towering curved LED screens that wrap around the entire length of the venue, it gives audiences the most immersive, seamless experience that human ingenuity has made possible.
And while the live audience is in for a treat, it is almost impossible to give the same quality of experience to the viewers watching on TV. But that isn’t stopping Dana White and co. from trying. The UFC, after all, has spent around $20 million in production costs alone, making it the most expensive UFC card in history. But what has all that money gone into? Well, Dana White explained that in a recent interview.

“So every night, every Saturday night tonight included we put on an in-house live event and we put on a television event that goes out to the world. Two different types of shows, with two different groups of people that run each one. That night we’ll have two more trucks so you will have the greatest director in Hollywood right now that does all the award shows, okay. His name is Glenn Weiss, he’ll be shooting both of those live and trying to make the people at home feel the experience at the Sphere. So all this stuff has to come together and be seamless on September 14th it’s going to be amazing,” White said.

The UFC CEO explained that the promotion was doubling its production team and has hired 14-time Emmy Award winner Glenn Weiss to direct the event. Clearly, the UFC has chosen the best man they could find for the event who excels at directing live events. Needless to say, a lot is riding on the Noche card as a successful card may make it a regular combat sports venue. A failure, however, will probably mean that this is the last time a fight card is put on there, simply because of the prohibitive costs involved. But at least on paper, the actual production of the event seems quite promising.
UFC 306 to feature six short films and fights in ‘different worlds’
According to Craig Borsari, the UFC’s chief content officer, the Sphere card will feature six short films about the contribution of Mexico to the combat sports world. The event, of course, is to commemorate the Mexican Independence Day, and it is only natural for the promotion to focus on Mexico. And as if that wasn’t enough, the fights themselves would happen in different ‘worlds’. Of course, the UFC is the first to hold a live combat sports event at the iconic venue, which comes with huge risks.

No one, not even the UFC knows how the card will turn out, especially for the TV audience, simply because there is no frame of reference for it. Another issues that the UFC has to contend with is that Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, by far the biggest Mexican fighter in the world, is fighting on the same night in the same city as UFC Noche.
It could either be a huge disaster, making all of the investment in vain, or a massive hit that fans will never forget. To find out which it is, fans will have to tune into the UFC Noche card next week. What are your thoughts on Dana White’s revelations about the UFC 306 card?
