As he promised, a few hours ago, Dana White took to his Instagram handle and announced that Alex Pereira will defend his light heavyweight title against former champion Jamahal Hill. The latter, who’s been out of action for almost over a year, was initially scheduled to face Jiri Prochazka. However, ‘Sweet Dreams’ suffered a serious Achilles injury, that forced him to relinquish the 205-pound title. Instead, Dana White pitted Pereira against Prochazka for the vacant title at UFC 295, following his win over Jan Blachowicz at UFC 291.

Alex Pereira went on to win the light heavyweight championship with a knockout, in just seven UFC fights. But now, he will defend his title against Jamahal Hill, someone who never lost his championship. This is the reason why Dana White considered giving him the title shot as Pereira will have a chance to avenge his mentor, Glover Teixeira, whom Hill defeated, to win the light heavyweight title at UFC 283.
When the news dropped that he would be defending his title at UFC 300, Pereira sent a message to Hill in an Instagram story of him walking a tiger. It was a clear message that he was prepared to bring the fight to ‘Sweet Dreams’ as fans can expect a knockout in the UFC 300 main event. Meanwhile, the fans were not happy with Dana White’s decision to put Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill in the main event and wished that he had considered putting Israel Adesanya against ‘Poatan’ for the 205-pound title instead.
Meanwhile, Tom Aspinall, who claimed to be training hard to be able to fight in April, will also miss out on the opportunity to fight in that month. Not only that, the UFC CEO also confirmed that the biggest star of the promotion will miss out on a UFC 300 fight, and that is Conor McGregor.
Conor McGregor lied about his UFC 300 inclusion
The UFC’s first-ever simultaneous two-division champion, or double champion, Conor McGregor has been out of action for more than two years. He suffered a nasty leg injury in his last fight against Dustin Poirier, which justified his long hiatus to some extent. Meanwhile, the hiatus saw McGregor being busy in his ventures outside the Octagon and even completed filming his first Hollywood flick, ‘Road House‘, the trailer for which dropped recently.
Nevertheless, he kept tweeting and even telling interviewers that he was planning to make a comeback in April, at UFC 300, against his slated opponent, Michael Chandler. Conor McGregor mentioned his plans to fight Nate Diaz in a trilogy bout and Justin Gaethje for the BMF title after the Chandler fight. Furthermore, he even tagged Dana White in a social media post to make an announcement of his return at that historic UFC 300 PPV just days before the Super Bowl, but the UFC CEO, it seems, had something else in mind altogether.
It turns out that the Irishman lied about his inclusion in UFC 300. During the UFC 298 post-fight press conference, a reporter asked Dana White if he was ever considering having Conor McGregor return in April. He simply replied by saying, “No,” indicating that there were no plans to feature ‘The Notorious’ on the UFC 300 card.
Furthermore, White also did not confirm McGregor’s claim about a return in June, which adds more uncertainty surrounding his eventual return to the Octagon. With the UFC CEO announcing the light heavyweight title fight at the historic April pay-per-view, he also revealed that welterweight champion Leon Edwards was prepared to step in and save the UFC 300 main event.
Leon Edwards was willing to fight anyone in the April headliner
For a while, there were rumors that Leon Edwards would put his title up for grabs against Belal Muhammad at UFC 300. However, that will not happen, but during the press conference, Dana White mentioned that ‘Rocky’ was open to fighting anyone that the UFC had in mind for the main event.
Furthermore, the 54-year-old even put forward three names for Edwards to consider as opponents for his next title defense. The Briton had mentioned earlier, after beating Colby Covington at UFC 296, that he didn’t care who stepped in to fight him when he agreed to give Belal Muhammad a shot at his title, who had been waiting for that opportunity for a long time and had even made a case for it with a 9-fight winning streak.
“Let me say this. Leon Edward has had like three opponents throughout this thing. Leon Edwards doesn’t say no to anybody,” said Dana White. He further praised the welterweight champion for having that kind of attitude and had no problems with who he was pitted against. “This kid is an absolute stud. He’s had like three I throwed at him during UFC 300. Was willing to take on anybody. Kid’s an absolute stud.”
With Leon Edwards out of the equation for UFC 300, fans will have to wait for his next title defense and whether it will be against Belal Muhammad. Meanwhile, Dana White still mentioned that he was not done announcing the fights for UFC 300 just yet.
BMF title to feature in the co-main event with one more fight to be added to the card
While the main event has been sorted out, people were wondering what the co-main event of UFC 300 would be. As such, reporters also asked Dana White about the fight during the UFC 298 post-fight press conference about what he had in mind for the second biggest fight of the card. The UFC CEO mentioned that there was already another title fight on the card, which is the BMF title, and that will be featured in the co-main event spot. Hence, Justin Gaethje will put up the title against Max Holloway, in an effort to become the first one to successfully defend the BMF title since its inception in 2019.
It was unusual to see Dana White put the BMF title up for grabs in a title defense fight since he was not in favor of that idea earlier. Moreover, Jorge Masvidal, who was the inaugural champion, never got the chance to defend the title when he defeated Nate Diaz to win it. Meanwhile, when fans learned that Justin Gaethje will be fighting Max Holloway, they expressed their concerns for the former featherweight champion.

Moreover, Joe Rogan contended that it was a bad fight for Holloway, and instead, he should have looked ahead to fighting for the 145-pound title instead of fighting at lightweight. Despite what has been said about that fight, it will take place anyway and it would be interesting to see how it pans out for both Holloway and Gaethje.

In addition to the confirmation of the co-main event, Dana White also revealed that he was working with the matchmakers to add another fight to the UFC 300 card. However, he did not reveal many details regarding it and so far, we have 12 fights on the card as we wait to see what more he has in mind for the final additions to the card.

UFC 200 saw a special card canvas to mark the historic event, and when Dana White was asked whether he had the same plan for UFC 300, he mentioned that he had not thought about it yet. However, there is a chance that it will be just as big, if not bigger. On the other hand, when it comes to fight cards, everything is subject to change. White mentioned that a reshuffle may not be out of the question, as they are still weeks away from the triple-century event. It remains to be seen what the final card will look like in the days to come. It will be interesting to see how UFC 300 fares as the first two PPVs of 2024 have already been big successes.
