Colby Covington has the chance to become the undisputed welterweight champion at UFC 296. He will take on the reigning champion Leon Edwards on December 16th in the T-Mobile Arena. Meanwhile, fellow welterweight Gilbert Burns appeared in an interview recently and ideated that Covington could look to challenge Conor McGregor if he becomes the champion.

Joe Rogan recently mentioned that if there’s anybody who can take Leon Edwards, it’s Colby Covington. There is a chance that ‘Chaos’ could end up winning the title. Meanwhile, Gilbert Burns believes that if Covington emerges as the winner at UFC 296, he could go for a big-money fight against Conor McGregor. “If Colby wins, he might get a rematch or he might get crazy trying to pitch a fight against Conor McGregor,” ‘Durinho’ told TMZ.

The Brazilian also believes that Colby Covington is going to make the most out of his championship reign. This will be his chance to make as much money as he can as the champion. “I think if Colby wins, he goes a little bit out of the way because he’s going to try to make the most money and he should as a champion because now they earn the PPV points,” Burns added. Meanwhile, he also gave his take on what route the UFC would take if Leon Edwards defeats Covington.

What happens if Leon Edwards retains his title?

There is no doubt about Colby Covington’s plans if he wins the gold. Regardless, if Leon Edwards manages to successfully defend his title, Burns believes that he’ll have to take on the other contenders in the division. He voiced, “If Colby wins, he goes crazy. He’s gonna try to get a big fight. if Leon wins, I think they still got to go through the division.”

Nevertheless, Burns has suggested two routes that a champion must take. The first is to take on all the number-one contenders to build a reputation in the division. Only after that, the champion can think of aiming to get a superfight to grab a good paycheck.

“Two things that you should do when you become a champion. Fight the number one contenders because you’ve been there and you know how long it takes for you to become a number one contender. But whenever the time is right, get the super fight here and there and make that extra money,” ‘Durinho’ added.
