One of the most intriguing storylines in the UFC has been taking place in the welterweight division for quite a while now. Culminating over the last few years, which started off with the backstage scuffle between Leon Edwards and Jorge Masvidal, it appears to have finally reached a full circle as we head into UFC 287. Following that infamous incident, Edwards went on to win UFC gold, while Masvidal also claimed the BMF title. On a side note, ‘Gamebred’ got involved in yet another scuffle right ahead of UFC 287 with clips of it now going viral on social media.
Although President Dana White earlier confirmed that Edwards would be defending his title against Colby Covington, the possibility of Masvidal winning his fight at UFC 287 opens up multiple scenarios for the promotion. Addressing this, White, in a recent interview, shared his take on the Masvidal and Edwards rivalry. He mentioned how a fight between the two would be one of the biggest events in the history of the promotion.

Jorge Masvidal had earlier opened up about fighting Edwards for the welterweight gold and how a win against Gilbert Burns could open up that door for him. When asked about this, Dana White expressed his opinion, claiming that the fight would be one of the biggest events in the UFC. Although he also added that both fighters have to win their upcoming bouts for that to take place.
“Let me tell you what’s going to happen if he goes in and he does that against a guy like Gilbert Burns right, whom I have a ton of respect for Gilbert Burns is an absolute bada**… then you have Colby Covington versus Leon Edwards. And if Leon Edwards beats Colby Covington; the history between Leon Edwards and Masvidal, and they both win these fights. That fight will be so huge people will be dying to see that fight.” White stated.
For the UFC president, if the possibility of that fight did open up, he said that it’d probably take place in Miami, Masvidal’s hometown.
“It will be absolutely massive, and maybe we do it back in Miami.” he said.
The UFC president had earlier confirmed that a popular welterweight contender would get the title shot against the Englishman.

UFC 286 had one of the biggest surprises in store when Colby Covington was announced as the backup fighter for the main event between Edwards and Kamaru Usman. While it didn’t go down well with many fans and fighters, Covington earned himself a title shot with his efforts to make weight on short notice.
Despite the disappointment among the contenders in the division with this news, Masvidal claimed that if he could beat Burns, it might be him who could face Edwards instead of Covington.

Now with White’s statement, Masvidal might still get a chance to face Edwards. It looks like both have to handle their next fights before they could settle their differences inside the cage.
