Cortez likes to credit her Mexican heritage as she enters the arena for a fight. And what better way is there to do so than walking out to ‘Como la Flor’, a song that tends to give goosebumps as Selena Y Los Dinos sings the melodies? That was the song she chose when she defeated Vanessa Melo at UFC Fight Night 164. Yep! That was the first time when Cortez entered the Octagon. Even in her last battle against Jasmine Jasudavicius at Noche UFC, Cortez repeated the trend of walking out to ‘Como la Flor’ and defeating her opponents.

Cortez’s journey in the MMA world began with nothing but sorrow, as her brother passed on to the afterlife. It was her brother’s dream to become a fighter under the banner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. After her brother’s death, she began training with his friend, Henry Cejudo. But tragedy struck once again as the Mexican-American lost her mother.

With memories of her deceased family, Cortez valiantly fought in her 2017 debut MMA bout. Unfortunately, she was unable to clinch a victory. But that was the only time she faced defeat. Currently boasting an undefeated record in the UFC, the flyweight strikes fear in most of her opponents. But before Cortez faces her enemies, she lets her walkout song conquer the audience’s heart.

But the Mexican-American mixed martial artist sent flutters through the fight fans’ heartbeats as she took a drastic step to make weight for her fight against Rose Namajunas. Let’s see what Cortez did to fight at UFC Denver.

Crazy step to make weight

Namajunas was previously pitted against Maycee Barber. However, Barber had to pull out owing to her medical problems. To save the card, Tracy Cortez stepped up and agreed to fight ‘Thug’ on short notice. However, at the weigh-ins, the Mexican-American fighter weighed a tad bit over 126 lbs. Within a flash, she decided to chop down her hair. To the MMA fans’ surprise, the emergency haircut helped her make weight.

Needless to say, the act garnered quite a lot of applause from the fighting community. Following the weigh-in ceremony, the beloved MMA journalist from ESPN MMA, Megan Olivi, enquired about the thoughts that ran through the flyweight’s mind as she decided to take such a measure to make weight. Cortez replied, “Normally I was ahead of schedule for my original fight and had to push everything. What was it, 0.5 (pounds)? I was like, ‘No hesitation. We’ll do whatever it takes.’ This is a big opportunity and it’ll be a shame to miss it by 0.5.”

But will this drastic measure help her win against Namajunas? Only time can tell. But one thing is certain. Cortez is going to make the fans sway with her walkout song at UFC Denver.
