Dana White's payouts: Are UFC fighters finally getting the respect and money they deserve?

Caio Borralho and Jared Cannonier went to war for five rounds in their UFC ESPN 62 clash last night for an incredibly exciting middleweight clash. While Borralho ultimately emerged victorious on the judges’ scorecard with a unanimous decision, Ryan Loder won season 32 of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ in style, stopping Robert Valentin in the first round of their main card clash, among other exciting clashes on the ‘Apex’ card that we will discuss later.

Fans, of course, are always curious about how much fighters, especially lesser-known names on Fight Night cards, get paid for their clash. And while UFC fight purses are kept secret and can only be guessed at, let us take a look at the one part of fighter pay that is revealed officially by the UFC itself and paid out by its outfitting partner, Venum- Compliance Pay.

Since Compliance Pay depends mainly upon the number of fights and sticking to the outfitting and media obligation, it was not surprising to see Angela Hill, who, at 26 UFC appearances is the second-most experienced female fighter in the UFC get the highest-tier $21k in Compliance Pay for her co-main event bout against Tabatha Ricci.

Her opponent, eight fights into the UFC, got a mere $4k in Compliance Pay for her winning effort against Hill. Neil Magny, another veteran, with over thirty UFC fights under his belt too got $21k for his incredible first-round loss to Michael Morales on the main card. On the other hand, Morales took home an additional $6k in Compliance Pay.

In the main event, middleweight veteran Jared Cannonier walked away $16k richer despite losing to Caio Barralho, who made $6k in Compliance Pay. Another $21k recipient was Gerald Meerschaert, who was making his 21st UFC appearance, and thus just qualified for the highest (non-champion) Compliance Pay tier.

In total, the Dana White-led promotion paid out $166,500 for the Las Vegas card to take up the total estimated compliance payout to over $28 million since the program started in 2021.

Dana White hands out two ‘Performance’ bonuses

UFC ESPN 62 was a mostly pretty exciting affair with more than its fair share of stoppages. So much so that Dana White and co. gave two $50k ‘Performance of the Night’ bonuses after the card, instead of the usual one. The first went to Michael Morales for his spectacular first-round stoppage of the veteran Magny, which made sure he remains undefeated.

Gerald Meerschaert used every ounce and every drop of his experience in the promotion to stage an incredible comeback, submit Edmen Shahbazyan in the second round, and take home an additional $50k. Not to mention ‘GM3’ now holds the record for the most submissions in the middleweight division. And the middleweight division was well represented on the card as far as bonuses go.

As is customary, the UFC gave out just one ‘Fight of the Night’ bonus. No one was surprised to see Caio Borralho and Jared Cannonier rightfully add $50k to their purses for their incredible main event clash. What are your thoughts about the event? Let us know in the comments below.
