Winners: Merab, Valentina and Dana White
First of all, let’s just take a moment to appreciate the production of the show, shall we? The screening of the six short films showing the journey of Mexico, from their struggle for freedom to the traditions, and the onward future, was mesmerizing. We could hear the cheers of the live audience and even the proclamation of excitement from Joe Rogan! Many fans and veterans had expected this huge event to be a flop but look at Dana White now! He surely got the last laugh.
The world witnessed something equally historic and mesmerizing and White was truly happy with how the event turned out. He was so happy with his win that he wanted more shows to happen at The Sphere. He also encouraged other sports organizations to make events happen in the venue. He said, “It would have to be. Turki loves this and he buys the entire sphere. I should not say boxing with him floating around. I would say NBA and these companies you know that’s tons of money. I wouldn’t say no. We showed everybody today that’s it possible. You can do more than concerts and pull them off.”
Dana White is paving the way for more sports genres to showcase their amazing talent inside an amazing venue like The Sphere. However, White said that he would not be returning to The Sphere anymore. During the post-fight press conference, he said, “No [not coming back for another UFC event at the Sphere]. I’m under contract with MGM”. All in all, White was super proud of the efforts of everyone involved in the event. Now let’s come to the fight winners, shall we?
Merab Dvalishvili takes the bantamweight title.
‘The Machine’ brought an end to the legacy of Sean O’Malley with a unanimous decision at UFC 306. He finally became a title holder and that too, in such a historic event. Dvalishvili drew first blood in this fierce battle and held his ground. He had a few brief striking exchanges and got ‘Suga’ on the mat. The damage was minimal but the tone of the fight was deadly.
The second round saw Dvalishvili with more of the same stance. Yet, there was an odd moment where it appeared that he thought the round ended, based on Herb Dean’s instructions, and gave up the submission. However, with time still on the clock ‘Suga’ tried a surprise attack which eventually failed due to Dvalishvili being laser-focused. The Machine’s pressure was too much and suffocated the now-former champion.
Finally, the Georgian had his crowning moment and won the belt. He celebrated it inside the octagon and even outside it, by dancing with another winner; Valentina Shevchenko.
Valentina Shevchenko gets her belt back.
She reclaimed the throne at UFC women’s flyweight with a rigorous fight for 5 rounds and 25 minutes. Shevchenko showed why she is one of the top dogs at UFC. She won with a one-sided decision over Alexa Grasso.
The 36-year-old battled Grasso to a draw in their rematch last year after losing the belt in early 2023. Now she has reclaimed her throne by winning an event in the iconic Sphere. She was on a mission and “Bullet” won a one-sided unanimous decision to put the final nail into the coffin of her rivalry with Grasso. However, she appreciated her opponent in the post-fight interview and showed her multifaceted talents by speaking in Thai and Spanish.
“Valentina on a mission,” UFC welterweight Max Griffin wrote summing up her performance tonight. While talking about the winners we often forget about the unspoken champs who might have lost this time around. But everyone has bad days, right? So let’s see who lost their crown but might get it back!
Sean O’Malley lost his crown
‘Suga’ failed to put on his best trigger and even when he did hurt Dvalishvili late in the fifth round, it was too late to decide in favor of the former. The judge’s scorecards ultimately read 49-46, 48-47, and 48-47 leading to a Dvalishvili victory.
Both Dana White and O’Malley admitted that the performance was flat and not up to the mark under the iconic UFC 306 event. White acknowledged that ‘Suga’ might not have been in his best form tonight. He said the same during the post-fight presser, “I don’t disagree with you, he looked flat.”
White also said, “He hurt him with the body shot, he knew that he’d hurt him with the body shot and he kept going in trying to finish but yeah, I looked at the punch stats [and] it was like six in a couple of those rounds.” However, tides do turn so let’s hope for the best for ‘Suga.’ In the meantime, let’s see what happened with Alexa Grasso and Brian Ortega.
Alexa Grasso lost her title
Shevchenko secured 8 takedowns and held a shocking 16:04 control time in the fight. She did not risk things with Grasso who is an excellent boxer. The former took Grasso down on the mat at all the chances she got.
