For those who do not know, Rogan has had a deep relationship with martial arts all his life. He started off as a national-level Taekwondo fighter. He then shifted to Muay Thai and held a 2–1 amateur record. Rogan has been training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu since 1996. The popular UFC commentator holds black belts in both no-gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu and gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Talking to Smith, Rogan revealed that he was “fortunate” to not go out and party frequently in his early youth. According to him, it was only because he was training in martial arts, and he did not want to lose because of alcohol abuse.

“I was very fortunate that during my entire… from high school age to the time I started doing stand up, I didn’t party at all. Very very rarely, because I was competing. So because of that, I was always scared to lose. I was always scared that I would lose because I had gotten drunk and then I was hung over. It’s not fun. You don’t want that to happen. I was obsessed with not getting kicked in the face, but kicking people in the face. Not getting drunk was a solution to a lot of those problems.”

Smith also termed Rogan’s approach as the complete opposite of Jon Jones‘. “You took the opposite of the Jon Jones approach,” he said. This is because Jones had earlier revealed on the same podcast that he had a habit of partying and drinking before all his fights. According to the UFC heavyweight champion, he used his partying as a backup excuse, in case he lost any of his fights.
