After winning his UFC 300 main event match this April, Alex Pereira sets up for a heavyweight bout, up next. Already boasting one of the most impressive runs in UFC history, having become a two-division champion in only his seventh fight in the promotion, the 36-year-old wanted to make history. However, there was no genuine progress made on it, but a few recent developments suggest that the door to Pereira moving up to heavyweight is still open.

And a recent video of the 205-pound champ sparring with heavyweight knockout artist Tai Tuivasa has rekindled hope among some fans that a three-division champ status is not off the table for Pereira. The brief clip showed the two fighters sharpening their striking with some light sparring, and ‘Poatan’, with his length and superior speed, managed to catch the Pacific Islander with light jabs and uppercuts.

If he could move to the UFC’s heaviest division and win the title there, he would become the first and only three-division champion in the promotion’s history. Since then, no real progress has been made and his call for a heavyweight fight went nowhere. And the Brazilian no longer looked very interested in a move to 270.

Even after heavyweight champ Jon Jones floated a possible fight with Pereira, offering the light heavyweight champ what he wanted on a silver platter, ‘Poatan’s response was not too enthusiastic. After not getting a positive response from the UFC, the Brazilian admitted he had moved on from the idea of moving up but did not close the door on a future clash with the current pound-for-pound #2 ranked fighter. And fans had a wide variety of thoughts on the sparring video.
