Tony Ferguson will return to the UFC octagon on December 12 against Charles Oliveira in a lightweight battle. Ahead of his comeback, ‘El Cucuy’ touched upon his previous loss, lightweight belt aspirations, and the path ahead for 2021. recently talked to MMA Fighting ahead of his return fight. Here, he shed some light on his Gaethje loss at UFC 249, his title-shot aspirations, and the roadway ahead after this fight.
Replying to a question on his title-shot aspirations, Ferguson said, “That title’s a wet dream. Like that Farmer’s Insurance commercial, ‘You almost got it, keep it going, we’re just going to keep dangling it in front of you.’ I don’t know what the problem is. I don’t know if it’s because I’m Mexican. I’m an American with Mexican parts. 12 fight win streak, eight years in the making before women’s sports were even in (the UFC). Conor (McGregor) was on welfare. All these different things and I still didn’t earn a title shot.”

He continued, “But I’m still sitting saying f**k the free world, just like Eminem.”
“The most naked I’ve ever been my whole entire life. I’m still here. I’m still waiting. I’ve got the belt in my room. I could go after another belt, but how much greed is that? I’ve got an Ultimate Fighter trophy. I’ve got a (Fighter’s Only) trophy. I’ve got a UFC belt. I’ve got medals and I’m Lord of the Rings with all my championship rings.”
‘El Cucuy’ fumed over UFC’s match-making and setting up of opponents. Even after having a dazzling fight-streak, Ferguson believes the UFC never considered him a top contender for the lightweight gold.

Should Tony Ferguson get a shot towards the ultimate gold?
‘El Cucuy’ is the most resilient fighter in the lightweight roster. He debuted with the UFC in 2011 fighting at TUF. Tony won 3 fights straight after his debut but suffered a setback, losing to Michael Johnson. Right after that loss, Ferguson began his supreme run in the lightweight division with a 12-fight win streak.

His battle against the undefeated lord of lightweights, Khabib Nurmagomedov, was set to be the finest wars of the division. The UFC tried to re-book this highly cursed fight for the fifth time at UFC 249, but the COVID-19 pandemic halted its progress once again.
Ferguson opted to take on Justin Gaethje on the same card, and that turned out to be a huge upset for him and UFC’s fans.
