The show followed different fighters split into two teams – Team McGregor and Team Chandler. Headed by the Irish MMA Superstar Conor McGregor and rival coach ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler, the two teams were pitted against each other as the numbers dwindled to just two. Brad Katona, the eventual winner and a member of Team McGregor, was initially a part of Team Chandler. After getting his team switched during the show, the ‘Superman’ went on to create history at the finale.

Fans react and shower praises on Cody Gibson

Taking to the comments section of ESPN MMA’s congratulatory post, fans humorously appreciated Cody Gibson’s performance. Fans drew light-hearted and well-meaning parallels between a teacher’s strictness and the discipline of the UFC. One fan commented, “The history teacher is here to make history.” Another fan remarked, “No student is getting outta line with him”. Referring to the trouble the ‘Renegade’ gave Katona at the finals, one user commented, “Apush teachers are indeed menaces”. More fans of the athlete added to the teacher narrative. A section of fans also made a comparison between Cody and the character Brendan Conlon from the highly acclaimed movie ‘Warrior’. Brendan Conlon, played by Joel Edgerton, is an MMA fighter who faces his brother, played by Tom Hardy, at the finale of an MMA tournament. The character Brendan is a teacher in the movie, similar to Cody Gibson in real life. Some fans were quick to make this clever association. Notably, one fan said, “He based his life off the movie Warrior, Tom Hardy must be his brother”.

However, impressed by his performance, fans also didn’t let Dana White off the hook. They requested the UFC President to compensate the ‘Renegade’ for his outstanding performance; “Give the man 50K and another shot on contender series if not a straight up contract”.
