Is Aspinall the future of heavyweight MMA, or just another contender waiting for his shot?

Tom Aspinall doesn’t think he will get to face either Jon Jones or Stipe Miocic after their upcoming UFC 309 clash. Jones is the heavyweight champ and GOAT contender while Stipe Miocic is the most accomplished heavyweight in the promotion. Interestingly, this legacy fight will most probably result in being the swansong for both the combatants regardless of the result.

The reason is simple! After all, Jones has all but announced his intent to call it quits after ‘The Big Apple’ card while Miocic, on the other hand, hasn’t really addressed the situation. However, the former heavyweight champion is 42, last fought three years ago where he suffered a devastating knockout. This is why many expect him to hang up his gloves after UFC 309.

And Aspinall thinks what will happen after both legends retire is that he will be promoted to undisputed status, he revealed in a recent interview with MMA journalist extraordinaire Ariel Helwani.

“Do you think there’s a greater chance one guy wins and he fights you? As opposed to a guy who wins and doesn’t fight you and then you’re then gifted the belt like Robert Whittaker was after GSP retired?” Helwani asked.

“I think that’s probably most likely, yeah,” Aspinall admitted. But the interim champ hasn’t completely given up hope and feels he may have hurt either Jones or Miocic’s ego enough to goad them into fighting him after all.

“I don’t know, who knows, maybe one of the guys is going to come out, look absolutely fantastic and think ‘Yeah I’m going to shut this guy up now. Everyone thinks I’m going to lose to Aspinall, I’ve got I’ve got to shut him up.’

The Brit further added, “Maybe they’re going to have a big ego thing or maybe they’re just going to take the money, take what they’ve done and just retire, who knows, man… I would like to fight one of them of course but I don’t get emotionally attached to business,” Aspinall added. Since the Englishman is also the backup fighter for Jones-Miocic, his interesting prediction for the super-fight is worth taking a look at.

Tom Aspinall thinks Jones-Miocic is a 60-40 fight

Tom Aspinall favors Jon Jones to win his fight against Miocic this November, but just barely. The interim champ feels Miocic’s age and inactivity just puts him at too much of a disadvantage against Jones, who fought just last year and looked better than ever.

However, Aspinall did give the customary disclaimer- this is MMA and anything can happen, especially at heavyweight, where one good shot can end the fight. Still, as things stand, the Englishman feels ‘The Battle of the GOATs’ is a “60-40” affair towards Jones. Aspinall, of course, would love to face Jones, especially for the undisputed title.

But as he admitted, the odds of that happening are pretty slim. And one reason for that may be that Aspinall is a generational talent, as lethal on the ground as he is on the feet. Not to mention he is a natural size advantage over Jones, who spent nearly three years bulking up to fight at heavyweight. However, as even Aspinall has admitted, the possibility for that is remote. What are your thoughts on Aspinall’s prediction about the heavyweight title post-Jones-Miocic?
