In a recent interview, Jon Jones revealed that he might stick around for another fight after UFC 309. The heavyweight champ, of course, is set to face Stipe Miocic atop the Madison Square Garden card next weekend. After this, he has strongly indicated, he plans to retire. But in the same interview, the champ revealed that he will be open to fighting light heavyweight champ Alex Pereira if he beats Miocic.
This has left Tom Aspinall, the interim champ in limbo. But what is the factor that is stopping the champ from giving the Brit his shot to unify the gold? Well because the GOAT contender feels Aspinall just hasn’t done enough to prove himself worthy of fighting him. Naturally, Aspinall has taken a dim view of Jon Jones calling him a ‘nobody’ and responded in kind.
The English interim champ took to social media and posted a video telling ‘Bones’ exactly what he had done and why he deserved to fight him. In it, Aspinall pointed out that he has the shortest fight time in UFC history at 2:02 mins. He also has the second most finishes in the UFC at eight since 2020, when he joined the promotion. Not to mention he has the most knockouts per 15 minutes among all active fighters at 4.09, and has defeated five of the other nine current top-10 heavyweights.

But the thing is, Aspinall doesn’t need to justify himself. He is, after all, the interim champion of the division Jon Jones is the so-called undisputed champion of. Technically, Jones’ title is actually disputed at the moment and an argument could be made that he is not even the real heavyweight champ. At least most of the fans feel Aspinall holds the real belt and Jones is champion in name only. But Aspinall seems to have moved on and isn’t bothered about fighting Jones anymore.
Tom Aspinall reveals the reason for not going after Jon Jones anymore
If Tom Aspinall could beat Jon Jones in a fight, he would have a win over arguably the best fighter in the entire history of the sport on his resume. Needless to say, it would be a huge boost for the Englishman’s legacy and help him immensely in becoming the greatest ever heavyweight, as Michael Bisping feels he will be after Aspinall is done fighting.

However, Aspinall, after initially trying his best to goad Jones into a fight, seems to have given up. The Englishman seems to have accepted the fact that he is never going to fight the GOAT contender and isn’t putting on much of an attempt to make it happen. Many find it curious that the Englishman isn’t calling Jones a coward, a dr*g cheat and generally insulting Jones every day. After all, hurting Jones’s ego seems like Aspinall’s best bet.
But the reason Aspinall seems happy to let Jones pass him over is simple- he just doesn’t care much about his legacy. “I’m not bothered about legacy, I just feel like I’m the best heavyweight in the world and I want people to recognize it. That’s it! I don’t want to be the greatest heavyweight ever or anything like that,” he said in a recent interview. What do you think about Tom Aspinall’s reaction to Jon Jones insulting him?
