Tom Aspinall calling out Jon Jones—Is he right to question Jones' legacy over the steroid scandal?

Although we don’t have a proper date yet, the big fight that Dana White has planned for the heavyweight division will be between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic. But, as we all know, interim champion Tom Aspinall isn’t really that big of a fan of the matchup. He recently opened up on the clash between Jones and Miocic once again, while at the same time dishing some dirt on the undisputed champion’s shortcomings in the past.

The natural matchup that most fans believe should be made is a fight between the heavyweight and the interim heavyweight champion. This is because holding the interim championship automatically converts the interim title holder to the number one contender. Tom Aspinall was so disappointed with Dana White pairing Jon Jones with Stipe Miocic that he called the former 2-time champion Joe Biden, pointing out that he’s well past his prime.

Meanwhile, the interim heavyweight champion revealed as to why he made those comments about Stipe Miočić, which he primarily pointed to the fact that he’s not been in the game for a while now. The self-proclaimed ‘Honey Badger’ told Michael Bisping on the latter’s YouTube channel, “Why’re you giving a guy [a title shot], who’s 42 [or] however old he is?” That’s what Tom Aspinall had to say about Miocic.

Although there’s no bad blood between him and Stipe Miocic, Tom Aspinall doesn’t think that the part-time firefighter has made his case for a title shot. Nevertheless, it is what it is, and the interim champion would soon turn to Jon Jones, and took a bit of a jibe at the supposed ‘greatest of all time’.

Tom Aspinall disputes claims of Jon Jones being the GOAT

Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic are two of the greatest MMA exports ever, and understandably, Tom Aspinall has a huge amount of respect for both gentlemen. However, when it comes to looking up to these two stars, the interim champion prefers to keep Miocic in high regard, and that’s mostly because he’s never been caught cheating or failing drug tests, unlike Jones.

“I look up to Stipe more because… if there’s anything about drug tests going on, that’s a bit of an asterisk next to your name if there’s a drug test going on,” Tom Aspinall further stated. That wasn’t it by the way because the English fighter also questioned UFC Hall of Famer Anderson Silva‘s status as a legend of the game as well due to his troubles with banned substances.

Have an interesting take?

“When people talk about Anderson Silva being the best of all time, he definitely was but there was definitely some other stuff going on there,” Aspinall added. For the interim champion, a clean record is the only criterion for someone to be called a legend and to be someone that other people look up to.
