As Islam Makhachev claimed the lightweight crown at UFC 280, the Etihad Arena burst into celebrations. The celebrations soon turned sour when Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Khamzat Chimaev traded punches in the crowd. The cage-side brawl dampened the festivities and especially worried Khabib Nurmagomedov. Despite his disciple’s triumph, the Russian fighter couldn’t let go of what had transpired between his cousin and ‘Borz’. Therefore, he took it upon himself to bury the beef in an inspiring message as the leader of the pack.
The visuals of his cousin and the Swede fighter having a heated swap and exchanging punches disturbed ‘The Eagle’. He believed the incident in Abu Dhabi was a “bad look”. The unfortunate incident gained media attention, overshadowing Makhachev’s title victory. The 34-year-old fighter intervened to put the matter to rest when he facilitated a dialogue between both concerned fighters.

The former UFC champion in his message, alongside Makhachev and Chimaev, told the media, “What happened yesterday, the incident in Abu Dhabi when Islam just won the belt, it’s a very bad look for us. For us as a team, for Abubakar, for Khamzat, for Islam, every single one of us. Honestly, we are fed up with this stuff.”
Moreover, he mentioned the internet was teeming with visuals and many people had sent them messages and also called them. The fiasco pushed the historic event of Makhachev winning the belt into the background.
The undefeated 29-0 record holder then stated the fighters made peace after apologizing and embracing each other. He then hoped to only gather for good reasons thereafter. He expressed, “So we have gathered here and had a talk with our brothers. Apologized to each other and embraced each other. Inshallah, hopefully, from here on we will only gather together for good reasons only.”
Nurmagomedov hoped to see Chimaev win the belt
Following this, the Dagestani fighter declared the Swedish wrestler was very close to becoming a champion. Thus, he pitched an offer to gather again after Chimaev had won the belt. Furthermore, he hoped to never witness such a brawl again.
He announced, “Not for the truce, not for this kind of conversations but to celebrate one more champion that came from our brotherhood, Inshallah. I hope a moment like this will never happen again.”
