Tom Aspinall outshines Jon Jones and Mike Tyson—Is he the next big thing in UFC?

The co-main event at UFC 304 witnessed one of the strongest performances by Tom Aspinall, as he defeated Curtis Blaydes via TKO by punches. Aspinall redeemed himself of the single defeat in his career with the UFC 304 win. Not a single soul expected ‘Razor’ to go down within the very first round. Needless to say, the fight greatly impressed the fighting community, and Chael Sonnen was one of them.

However, ‘The American Gangster’ took note of something that put the ‘Honey Badger’ above top-tier heavyweights like Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. Does that mean Sonnen believes that Aspinall is stronger than Jones and DC? Let’s find out!

On the 29th of July, 2024, Sonnen took to his YouTube channel and revealed his opinion on the rematch between Blaydes and Aspinall. ‘The Bad Guy’ noted how Aspinall was surprised with himself during the bout. It wasn’t a perfect fight by the Britisher, but the way he brought down one of the strong heavyweights in the UFC, spoke a lot. Thereafter, he revealed the one thing that Aspinall had in his fighting career, that was missing from Jones’ and Cormier’s career. The comparison also involved other heavyweights like Randy Couture and Stipe Miocic.

Sonnen said, “And one thing about Tom that you won’t find, well on Jon Jones’ record, you probably would on Stipe’s, but you would not find it on Daniel Cormier’s record. I’m trying to think great heavyweight you would not find it on Randy Couture’s record. One thing about Tom is these boys he’s putting down, these are the big heavyweights. And I’m talking about size. I’m talking about actually getting on the scale and what they tip the scale at, right?”

Sonnen wasn’t oblivious to the fact that bringing down heavyweights was one of the Herculean tasks in the fighting universe. Even someone as celebrated as Mike Tyson had a bit of trouble bringing down heavyweights who weighed about 240-260 pounds. “These were the guys that Tom is touching one time. This is a shocking power guys,” expressed an awestruck Sonnen.

Have an interesting take?

With the 8th win under his belt, Aspinall truly aspires to become the heavyweight world champion. But since Jones is already scheduled for another fight, the interim HW champ had a peculiar idea.

Interim HW champ’s idea for UFC 309

After successfully defending his interim heavyweight belt, ‘Honey Badger’ sent a call out for ‘Bones’. Aspinall has been hinting at the desire to fight Jones for quite some time now. While Jones is currently set to fight Miocic, Aspinall proposed an unexpected matchup with 4 heavyweights in the Octagon. The proposal included Alex Pereira, Jones, Miocic, and the interim HW champ himself.

Aspinall said, “Here’s a thought for you. I was thinking about this today. They’re saying that Stipe [Miocic] and Jon Jones are going to fight in MSG [Madison Square Garden] in November. Why don’t we do a tournament? We’ll do Jon, Stipe, me, Alex [Pereira] and do a four-man tournament, two fights in one night, and let’s find out who the real heavyweight champion of the world is.”

This idea, without a doubt, has garnered quite a bit of reaction from the fight fans. But will it ever materialize? That’s something only the future knows. For now, do let us know about your thoughts on Sonnen’s analysis of Aspinall’s career in the comments down below.
