Former UFC star Alistair Overeem has announced his retirement. the 43-year-old had recently made headlines after a shocking physical transformation. Now, the former UFC heavyweight has revealed the reason behind his drastic physical change while announcing his decision to retire.

Overeem is a monumental figure in the combat sports world, literally and figuratively. Famous for his horse meat diet, his imposing physique earned him the nickname ‘Ubereem.’ He was the first fighter to hold world titles in MMA and K-1 kickboxing simultaneously. The former UFC title challenger was also a Strikeforce heavyweight champion and a Dream heavyweight champion.

Recently, Overeem sparked concerns after a picture of him went viral. ‘Ubereem’ looked like a shell of his former self in his drastically thinned-down physique, leading many to wonder if he was undergoing a health crisis. The veteran recently opened up about his retirement and the lifestyle changes he made to drop his ‘Ubereem’ physique.

Alistair Overeem announces retirement from combat sports

During a recent interview, Alistair Overeem announced that he had decided to stop fighting. His primary reason for the same was his health. This marked an end to his stellar career that began in 1999.

“This actually ties into what I want to do, because I actually just decided to stop fighting. This is not my thing anymore… “It’s been 25 years, right? We’re going to do other cool stuff now,” the UFC veteran said.

He also revealed that he plans to promote health in the coming stages of his life. Apparently, Overeem met a nutritionist who changed his life. He mentioned that he had stopped eating meat as it has negative health effects.

Overeem explains his dietary changes

Alistair Overeem said he went vegetarian from his previous diet of having meat for breakfast. His life-changing nutritionist told him about parasites in his body that were driving his proclivity to consume more meat. He added that his current breakfast was a bag of nuts that does not create any acidity in his body.

While the scientific backings of Overeem’s claims are unclear, he swears by them and states he feels healthier in this new lifestyle. Hopefully, the decorated comb sports veteran has a healthy and happy retirement.
