Islam Makhachev had a dream of claiming the No. 1 pound-for-pound spot in the UFC, a position once held by his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov, inching closer as he stepped into the octagon to face Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284. With a victorious performance, Makhachev managed to defeat ‘The Great,’ putting an end to his undefeated run in the promotion. However, to his dismay, the Australian fighter still maintained his position at the top of the pound-for-pound rankings.

Expressing his disappointment, the Dagestani fighter couldn’t fathom how he could defeat Volkanovski, yet not ascend to the coveted No. 1 spot. However, the narrative took a significant turn when Jon Jones made his highly anticipated return to the octagon after a three-year-long hiatus. Jones made a bold move by moving up to the heavyweight division to face Ciryl Gane for the vacant title.

In his divisional debut, ‘Jonny Bones’ made easy work of the Frenchman, swiftly defeating him in the opening round. Not only did he bring home the new belt, but he also secured the prestigious No. 1 spot on the pound-for-pound table, altering the rankings landscape. The fans had questions about this sudden change, and Makhachev, too, has now opened up about the situation, expressing his doubts and skepticism.
