Will AI truly eliminate bias, or just replace it with a new kind of controversy?

The UFC rankings, traditionally curated by a panel of media personnel for nearly 11 years, are expected to undergo a significant transformation. In a move towards modernization, Dana White has announced the integration of AI into the ranking system, aiming for a more objective and unbiased perspective on fighter standings.

This change comes in the wake of heated discussions following Alex Pereira’s dominant performance against Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 307. Despite Rountree Jr.’s valiant effort, he maintained a surprising #8 ranking, sparking frustration among fans and analysts alike. Recognizing the need for a fresh approach, White is now leveraging AI technology to refine the rankings. But how do UFC veterans feel about this shift? Let’s have a look!

During a recent episode of the Believe You Me podcast, Michael Bisping and Mike Harrington stumbled into an intriguing discussion about the UFC’s plans to incorporate AI into its ranking system. Dana White has been in talks with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg about leveraging artificial intelligence to refine what many see as a flawed ranking approach.

‘The Count’ shared his thoughts on this development, stating, “The idea behind using AI is to eliminate bias. I’m not here to defend the media, because I usually don’t, but I don’t think the issue is solely about bias. It seems more like there have been some questionable decisions being made.”

While Bisping’s remarks had a hint of condescension towards the media, he expressed his approval of the idea of integrating AI, recognizing its growing influence in various fields. He elaborated, “Sure, creating an AI algorithm might be complex, but if you mix in the right ingredients and criteria, it could yield something valuable. Why not give it a shot?”

The UFC head honcho confirmed that he has enlisted Mark Zuckerberg’s expertise to refine the rankings, sharing his ambition with AP News: “I’m totally going to fix the rankings. We’re planning to make some significant changes as we head into 2025.” Notably, the impact of this overhaul is already visible, as evidenced by a substantial shift in Max Holloway’s ranking.

Dana White got his hands dirty and helped alter the rankings inUFC

Since 2013, UFC rankings have relied on a panel of media members, but Dana White has expressed frustration over the current state of affairs. “I just can’t handle incompetence,” the UFC CEO declared after Dana White’s Contender Series 76. “It’s driving me crazy. I can’t let people who don’t know what they’re talking about handle the rankings anymore. I have to figure out a solution.”, he further added.

White’s determination to overhaul the system was evident when he scrutinized the rankings during a video session with trusted colleagues, pointing out discrepancies. He highlighted Max Holloway’s position at #9 after UFC 300, especially after Holloway had slayed #3 Justin Gaethje by jumping up a weight class and by way of knockout. “Look at number 9. Max Holloway is number 9, and he beat the guy who’s #3. How the fu** does that make sense?” he questioned.

Following White’s intervention, Holloway’s ranking improved to #5, prompting shifts for several fighters. Michael Chandler, set to face Charles Oliveira at UFC 309, dropped to #7, while Oliveira moved to #2. Whereas Magomed Ankalaev rose to #1, tied with Jiri Prochazka in the light heavyweight division.

These updates can greatly impact fighters, especially those with upcoming bouts. Do you think this technological shift will bring about a more accurate and reliable ranking system? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
