Ryan is notorious for his outspoken nature as he is for his skills on the mat. The five-time ADCC champion recently had a debilitating battle with a strep infection. He has seemingly recovered and is preparing to compete soon. While he usually targets his critics and haters with his social media posts, he had something different in mind on his late father’s birthday.

Gordon Ryan took to Instagram to write a thoughtful message about his late father. The 27-year-old recalled a beautiful memory from his childhood to commemorate his father, ‘Big Gord. Gordon Ryan Sr. was a familiar figure to BJJ fans thanks to his involvement in his sons’ careers.’ He was a common presence on Ryan’s social media. Ryan Sr. even moved to Puerto Rico with his sons Nicky Ryan and Gordon Ryan when they went there to train BJJ. Therefore, Ryan had a lot of memories with his father, but this one was special.

In a recent Instagram post, Gordon Ryan wished his late father a happy 62nd birthday. “Happy 62nd birthday Big Gord,” wrote Ryan with a heart emoji. He had also added a picture of himself with his dad in a car. He explained the fond memory in the remainder of the post.

Ryan said that a lot of his early childhood comprised of riding in that car with the roof down and rock n roll playing. The 27-year-old recollected the time they were riding around when he was 5 or 6 years old. He said he remembered having a McDonald’s drink in his hand.

He wrote, “We pulled into the parking lot of my school, led zepplin playing, and without any notice, he just started doing donuts all around the lot. My jaw dropped and I started giggling from what I thought then was an indescribable amount of power. I couldn’t conceive a car or machine more powerful (than a 300 hp 1986 corvette).”

Ryan continued, “Big gord stops and looking over at me laughing, starts laughing himself and says “it’s right a fuckin rocketship, right?!?”. I was In total awe of wtf had just happened, and we had years more rides together all the up until he was gone. To this day, there’s no more calming place in the world for me than driving that car around, listening to his home made burnt CD’s that we listened to 20 years ago.”

One could tell from Ryan’s message how he missed his father and how he cherished their time together. The comment section under the post also had fans wishing him love and sharing things about their own fathers.
