This comes in light of the cancellation of the welterweight bout between Jack Della Maddalena and Josiah Harrell at UFC 290’s preliminary card. White’s remarks bring forth UFC’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of its athletes, as he revealed that the organization spends a substantial amount of earnings on health and safety protocols.

The saga leading up to UFC 290 took an unexpected turn when Josiah Harrell’s pre-fight MRI revealed a rare neurological condition known as moyamoya. Though his fight was called off, Harrell’s condition is not currently deemed career-ending. There’s still hope for his future in the sport. Harrell had stepped in on short notice for the fight. He was to face off against Della Maddalena, a rising talent in the welterweight division.

During the post-fight interview at UFC 290, White asserted his commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its fighters. He told reporters about the steps taken to detect and address potential health issues before and after fighters arrive on the scene. White stated, “There’s been so many kids that we’ve caught stuff…we spend the money to make sure that all these athletes are safe and healthy. It’s everything – it’s the most important thing in this business.”

When asked about the financial commitment to health and safety protocols, White didn’t hesitate to disclose the magnitude of UFC’s investment. He revealed that the organization spends a “minimum of $10 million a year” on these crucial measures. This remarkable investment cements the UFC’s dedication to providing top-tier medical care, screening processes, and overall athlete well-being.

The UFC’s investment in health and safety extends beyond pre-fight medical examinations. They are also there during The Ultimate Fighter and the Contender series, ensuring that young prospects are thoroughly evaluated before entering the octagon. This is part of the UFC’s strategy to maintain a stellar track record in fighter safety. White expressed his hopes for this trend to persist. He  added, “We have a great track record and hopefully that continues…”
