Despite winning via unanimous decision, Makhachev was not as dominant as many had hoped and struggled in some moments during the fight. Helwani pointed out that Makhachev is not as invincible as many believe him to be, and that he is not yet on the same level as his mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

He said, “And I’m sorry he isn’t as good as Khabib. He is not, he is not as good as Khabib, He is not. At this stage 26 fights in, Khabib was more refined dominant better, he is not. That being said, he is one of the top best three fighters on the planet.”

The reason for Helwani’s opinion is that Khabib never faced the same level of adversity that Makhachev did during his fight against Volkanovski. Khabib never got knocked out by lower-ranked opponents and never had a performance as lackluster as Makhachev’s on Saturday.
