Arguably the greatest welterweight of all time, Georges St-Pierre is a legend of the sport. During his reign as champion, the Quebec native defended the strap nine times; the third-highest in UFC history after Demetrious Johnson and Anderson Silva.

Furthermore, Georges St-Pierre returned to the octagon, after a four-year hiatus, for a title fight against the middleweight champion at the time Michael Bisping, to become a two-division champion.

Soon after, the fans began calling for a super fight between the former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Georges St-Pierre. A matchup between the two would have undoubtedly been one of the biggest fights in MMA history. However, the UFC had unique plans for ‘The Eagle’. And now a fight between these two legends is off the table, forever.

Interestingly, since the fight between Khabib and Georges St-Pierre never materialized, the fans brought up the possibility of a showdown with the reigning welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

However, in a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Georges St-Pierre explained why he was up for a fight with Nurmagomedov but not Kamaru Usman with the following statement.

“We were talking about it to the UFC and I know Khabib wanted that fight. I wanted that fight, but the UFC had other plans, so it did not materialize. Usman, on the other hand, he’s an amazing fighter, and he’s building up his legacy, but for me, the risk is not worth it. The most exciting thing to do for a fighter sometimes is the scariest. Khabib, because in terms of legacy, was the guy to beat.”

Considering his body of work in MMA, GSP has nothing left to prove inside the octagon. Regardless, GSP still continues to train and progress as a martial artist and plans to do so till the very end.
