The heart of Manhattan witnessed a major incident take place on December 4, 2024, as the CEO of the insurance company United HealthCare, Brian Thompson, was shot and fatally wounded outside the Hilton Midtown hotel. He was on his way to the building to hold an annual conference with the company’s investors when the tragedy occurred. Nevertheless, this news sent shockwaves across the nation. Moreover, the reactions to the incident were even more surprising. So much so that Joe Rogan dropped a major truth bomb on the deadly attack.
Speaking to stand-up comedian Brian Simpson on The Joe Rogan Experience #2266, the UFC commentator shared his disbelief over the fact that people celebrated the violent act against the CEO. As Simpson was shot, the streets of New York were filled with flyers and posters celebrating the incident. Speaking about it, Joe Rogan stated that, unlike the tragic shooting of John Lennon, people were more in favor of the supposed street justice.
He said, “It was like an assassination where he ‘deserved’ it, right? It didn’t seem like a bad thing. Even though people were like, ‘That was horrible,’ it didn’t seem as bad as if someone shot John Lennon, you know what I mean? Or not even a famous person—if someone just randomly shot some executive as he was walking out.”

The podcaster believed that the most disturbing thing to him was that people weren’t outraged about the incident. Why? Because United Healthcare has a staggering claim denial rate that is way above their competitors. He added, “The most disturbing wasn’t just that a lot of people cheered for it. The most disturbing part was that people weren’t mad, they weren’t outraged. They didn’t treat it like a regular assassination.”

Authorities arrested Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate, and charged him with the unlawful death of the CEO after a McDonald’s customer in Pennsylvania, who reacted quickly, spotted him and informed the authorities. However, it is also worth noting that even Joe Rogan poked fun at the incident through an Instagram post.
Joe Rogan’s post targeting the United Healthcare CEO’s death
The incident surely split the community in two, with some condemning the horrible crime and others praising the perpetrator for standing up to the insurance company. While Joe Rogan condemned the celebration in the recent JRE episode, earlier he also poked fun at the crime. Through a video on his Instagram post, he revealed how the UnitedHealthcare insurance company was defrauding their consumers by refusing their claims and how the insurance companies would never genuinely aid them.

The video was that of a song by Jesse Welles, aka Wellesmusic, who sang lyrics such as, “There’s no ‘you’ in the UnitedHealthcare, there’s no ‘me’ in the company, there’s no ‘us’ in the private trust, there’s hardly humans in humanity.” If that wasn’t enough, he explained how clients paid for the insurance office, the tools they use, and the desks they use, just to have their claims denied.
The UFC commentator appears to have entirely agreed with Welles’ opinion, as he stated in the video’s caption, “This song slaps,” while giving credit to the singer/songwriter. But what do you think of Rogan’s reaction? Did he actually change his mind about the whole incident? What are your thoughts on the crime? Let us know in the comments.
