And Chan Sung Jung walked back to the lockers to the Zombie song, with gloves in his hands and tears in his eyes. That’s the last of ‘The Korean Zombie’ the fans witnessed in the Octagon, and it was a perfect moment. Just a few moments ago, Max Holloway flatlined him, and the Korean fighter announced his retirement from MMA. The emotional moment reached its zenith when the fans joined in and sang along with his iconic entry song, Zombie.

Very few could have such a befitting end to their careers. The credit lies with Dana White and co. for their incredible gesture, and veteran referee John McCarthy lauds the UFC for it. Further, the iconic moment reminded him of another humble gesture: Fedor Emelianenko‘s retirement celebrations.

The American referee appeared in Ep. #392 of ‘Weighing In’ and touched upon the emotional moment that closed the proceedings of UFC Singapore. Further, recalling the crowd’s enthusiasm and their participation, he pointed out how the UFC did it “right”.

He said, “I want to give up the to the UFC. Very nice job at the end when Chan Sung Jung ‘The Korean Zombie’ is walking out. You started to play Zombie again. You got the crowd singing the song… It was a great moment, and you did it right.”

Following this, the 60-year-old compared it to Bellator’s efforts. The promotion had invited a star-studded lineup of MMA legends when Emelianenko fought Ryan Bader in his retirement fight. The likes of Randy Couture, Renzo Gracie, Matt Hughes, and Chuck Liddell were in the stands when the Russian fighter bowed out of Bellator.

“It was like when Bellator brought all the fighters for Fedor. That was a great moment, and they did it right. It’s really nice to see when someone deserves that kind of send-off or that moment to really be able to look and say, ‘You know what? My career was pretty, pretty goddamn cool’,” McCarthy added.

Coming back to ‘The Korean Zombie’, the LA native also speculated how the former featherweight fighter would look back at his last moments and the walk in the UFC.

How will The Korean Zombie recollect his last moments in the UFC?

McCarthy stated, “I think The Korean Zombie is going to look back at that moment, with all those people singing Zombie at the end, something he’ll never forget.”

He continued, “I mean, when he walked out of the cage, he took a second and took it all in. I mean, that lets you know that he was really appreciative. He understood the situation. He understood what was going on.”

‘The Korean Zombie’ ended his professional record at 17-8. His reputation for absorbing blows on the chin and relentless forward pressure earned him his nickname, and he stayed true to it till the very end. While he failed to win the featherweight strap, he entertained the fans and carved out a name for himself in the promotion’s history.
