In his first-ever title fight at UFC 259, ‘Funk Master’ faced the then champion, Petr Yan. The latter almost dominated the fight. However, he landed an illegal knee in the fourth round, which cost him his title.

While talking about the accusations, Sterling said, “It looked like I was faking. I’m like guys, I didn’t know there was a protocol on how you’re supposed to react after being illegally kneed into head from a shot you don’t expect to see; while you’re exhausted in a high-stakes fight… Was I supposed to pretend like I was being, like, Macho? Like, I’m just trying to gather myself.”
