UFC’s only symbolic belt, the BMF title is making a triumphant return to crown the baddest fighter in town. The BMF title was first introduced for Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244. This time, UFC boss Dana White has decided that Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier will step into the octagon to determine the new champion.
Gaethje and Poirier, both renowned for their relentless fighting styles, are two of the most deserving candidates for this epic showdown. Their previous performances have showcased their ability to endure brutal wars and entertain fans with their never-back-down attitude. This fight promises to be a clash of titans, with the winner laying claim to the prestigious BMF title.
However, the BMF title has garnered polarizing opinions from both fans and pundits. Some argue that it is merely a gimmick, lacking the credibility of a traditional championship belt. While others believe that there is immense prestige and thrill attached to this title. Even Justin Gaethje himself isn’t much impressed by the belt, and recently made some surprising remarks about it. Recently, fans got to hear both sides of this argument in the ‘Weighing In’ podcast.

John McCarthy & Josh Thomson discuss the BMF title ahead of Justin Gaethje vs Dustin Poirier at UFC 291
The ‘Weighing In’ podcast, hosted by referee John McCarthy and former fighter Josh Thomson features detailed MMA discussions. In their recent discussion, Thomson was discussing the awaited return of Conor McGregor. Thomson stated his belief that McGregor vs Chandler should not be a main event because it is not a title fight.
Responding to this, McCarthy put forward the argument that UFC 291’s main event, Justin Gaethje vs Dustin Poirier, is also a not-title fight. However, Thomson argued on this and stated that it does have a title on the line – The BMF Title!

Moving forward with the discussion, McCarthy was very blunt about his opinions that BMF is not a legitimate title. “That’s not a title! I’m all fine with the BMF thing but it’s really not a title because you don’t defend it.”
At the same time, Thomson also stood firm in his beliefs that BMF should be given the status of a proper title. Further, he also predicted the BMF belt to be defended frequently in the future. “You’re hating now John, there’s the BMF title buddy. It kind of is. Maybe they will defend it. it’s really nice if maybe they will defend it.”
